LR Freelander and Discovery advice please.
« on: 05 May 2011, 22:50:04 »

I am planning on buying a 'Series' Landrover as a toy / winter use, I have had 3 previously, 2 being ex MOD so not scared off by 24 volts etc. :y  :y

However, I just wondered if anyone had any experience of the good or bad points of the above mentioned cars are, they are more comfy and I get get an auto :-/

Still fancy the 'Series' though and throw a few mods on it and some big knobbly tyres..... :D :D

Not interested in a Range Rover...... :)

Lol, well its well documented on my thoughts on land Rovers....there great off road and totaly shite on them! (plus I spend to much of my time having to fix and weld the dam things)

The Freelander I always found shite off and on road.

The Disco's were better but, lacked refinement on the road and were not so capable off, only seemed to make sense if you needed to pull heavy loads.

Discovery and Range Rover are basically the same vehicle.

I have a Disco 1 which, if I was honest, I'd find difficult to do without. It spends pretty much all of it's time in fields, towing hay, cars, horses or full of Spaniels. Anmd I'm doing up a classic Range Rover, mainly because I prefer the looks.

They're thirsty, unreliable, painfully slow if you get a diesel, but have a great charm and can be fixed with the most basic of tool kits.

the key to driving manners is to give it a full suspension rebuild as soon as you get it, irrespective of the mileage.

oh yes, and parts are dead cheap.

I have had a Disco 1 here for Breaking and nothing has hardly gone off it.... Mrs. Loo-knee has one and I must say not alot has gone wrong with it either, other than blanking off the EGR which took less than an hour.

She Loves her's

I still prefer the Range Rover though even though it goes wrong far more  :D

To be honest they are quiet a nice little car, something I would buy for my girls as I would feel safe with them in one.
The 1.8 engines are easy to work on as there is plenty of room, enough room in the back, smallish boot .... the mpg isn't great though..

As for an off roader I dont think thet are made for that

Just my view nothing more ;) ;)

Disco is capable, though I and II rust like old rangies, III and IV too rather expensive ;D

Freelander isn't a bad car, but not built to do the work of defenders and discos. Decent reliable runners though, though 1.8 does need mls hg

with a series Land Rover, expect lower back damage within a few miles of home. They are just too stiffly sprung (remember leaf springs) and too slow to be anything other than a danger in modern traffic.

Do what I done and made it look like it was costing a fortune in to keep replacing the running gear on the mig because of the pot holes in the roads and it would be cheaper to buy a disco that can handle our roads.
Mine has had the 2" lift kit larger intercooler(same size as rad) and polly bushed ::) :y

Ah yes, proper British made vehicles that come pre-loaded with a good dose of rust from the factory!

This was owned by a friend of mine:

(Scrapped as beyond economical repair at that point - every body mounting point had rusted through more or less.. that and the 8 bent pushrods didn't help it's cause!)
