24 Hours to do an Oil Change!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: 04 June 2011, 14:18:59 »

Well yesterday afternoon before I left work I thought I would give the car an Oil & Filter change, so I drove the car over the pit in the workshops dropped the oil from the sump and started to take off the oil filter, anyway it was stuck on solid so I gave it a little pressure with a bar attached to the rachet and ended up cracking the casing for the filter, so as it was 5pm I had to wait until today to get a new casing £24.00 inc VAT from a dealer, its the first time I've done an oil change on my 3.2 but it needed it, the old filter was also fitted wrong as you can see from the pictures below, but it all sorted now :y

Yup, definitely neglected.  What was the service history like, full Vauxhall?  :P

*Awaits replys saying you should have taken the opportunity to convert to the spin on type filter, and to check and clean the breathers*

That oil filter looks exactly like the one that came off the 3.2 sat on my drive, which is seized solid. You might have had a lucky escape there Jim. ;)

Looks like somebody has (erroneously) used a 3/8ths rachet directly on the cap, rather than a 24mm socket ;)

I managed to tap it with a chisel and hammer to start it turning.

I have used the 3/8" square drive in the middle of mine, but you're better off using the 24mm hex. As seen on your new cap, GM have removed the option  ;)

I assume the oil flows through the middle & outwards, so when the filter blocks, it gets pushed off the clips & the oil forces the filter to the end of the housing.

Oil always flows from the outside of a filter into the centre so either it clogged and the pressure crushed it or it wasn't properly on when the lid was tightened overtightened and it got crushed then.

To be honest, once they are being changed regularly and correctly torqued, the paper filters are no bother at all. No need to change to cartridge, IMHO.
