How many migs are there?
« on: 15 June 2011, 16:28:04 »

May be a daft question / or may have been asked and answered.
How many were sold in this country and how many do people estimate are left on the road?

Just curious as cars that were in abundance suddenly seem to become very rare.

I remember cars from the late 80's and early 90's that just seemed to disappear very quickly. Such as escorts, orions sierras etc.
Wonder how long omega's have?
Maybe as they are such a good motor and a bit of a cult following they'll hang around a bit.

Ford shite, inbuilt self destruction, if the rust doesn't kill them, the engines do

I think from the figures posted last year there were just over 1000 3.0 elite auto saloons left on the road, god knows how many a year later, EP and Daz must have done a good few in between them

That's why you see dozens of mk2/3 Cavaliers, Mk1/2 Astras, early Novas and Carltons/Senators every day.

Don't you?

Hell, early Vectras, Mondeos, Mk3 Golfs etc are all nearly 20 years old, worth less than £1K and so are simply surviving by the skin of their teeth. Lets face it, a £400 clutch job will kill a decent Mondeo(and they don't even have a DMF!), and modern cars are getting worse in that regard.
Just imagine what the need for replacement common rail injectors are going to do a car's survivability very soon. Actually, thinking about it, that time is here now; I've picked up a number of 4/5 year old VWs that have already needed more than one(at easy 4 figure repair bills), and are showing the same symptoms again.

I never said Vauxhalls were any better.  My views on a lot of Vauxhalls are well known here ;D.  Vauxhalls were blighted with rust issues, and underpowered engines, just not to the same extent ;D

A 1980s Ford will disintegrate in the wind quicker than a joyrider could nick an Mk II Astra ;D

I actually don't remember the last time i saw one (which is a good thing  :) ;D)
I owned a C reg 1.6 GL diesel many years ago :( It wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, but it did 70MPG :)
One of the crappiest cars i've owned & i hope it''s long dead  :y

The ford examples I used were just that examples, although TB you seem to have a passionate dislike  ;D
When I was a teenager and first started driving ('93) I had a couple of minis (I know rust well too), which were everywhere.
Then all of a sudden you realise they just aren't about anymore.
Are the omegas likely to hang around longer?

Hey, don't knock the orion  >:(. I had a 1.6 injection ghia black with pepper pot wheels and as a 19yr old it was a great pulling machine  :y
I really wanted a bmw 325i but could not afford insurance on one, as I also had a suzuki 600 bandit and my own house and mortgage! (and 2 jobs!)

Every Ford I've ever owned personally, or been responsible for (company vehicles), of which there are many, the only ones I ever rated were a K reg tranny (brilliant van, so much road presence, the traffic parts for you) and an R reg Fifi.  Mind you, both them had shite engines ;D

Most of them disappeared around me in a heap of iron oxide, just round about the time the engines expired around 80k ;D

Don't worry, I've had some shite Poxhalls as well. Worse was a Belmont GLSi. Went like the clappers on the first engine (2nd was gutless in comparison), but never liked the thing.  Only had it for about 3 months, still managed 30+k in it though

Want is surprising, I've never had a duff Rover. Every one has been comfortable, quick (for what it was), reliable and rust free.  Must have been a good boy in a previous life ;D

I'm sure the list must be longer than that.. you're just hiding it well ;)

Oh - since you mentioned Rovers.. I saw an old shape (square) 214Si the other day.. I thought they were all long gone, but apparently not!
