MOT & The Law
« on: 19 September 2011, 11:55:59 »

Just double checking my understanding...

If a car is declared SORN & has no valid tax or MOT, you can drive it to a pre-booked MOT appointment as long as its insured? (eg my Policy for my 2.2 covers other cars 3rd party)

Front Window Tints - On said car, they are without out a doubt illegal, research appears to get a mixed reaction to MOT, feeling I get is they are not part of the test, (assuming front windscreen is not tinted)

also after you get the Pass, the car would still be SORN, so it would need to be declared un-SORN then apply for tax disc with relevant insurance papers?  :-/

Not sure, but believe local tax office can do all that in one hit while you wait, and send off logbook to DVLA if required?

Would need to take MOT, insurance for that car (ie, not 3rd party cover you have with another policy), logbook, and money.

You could ring the local tax office to find out. One in Northampton (near BMW dealer), and on in centre of Oxford. No doubt, millions in London

Also check your 3rd party cover. It probably specifies that the vehicle must be insured in its own right too ;)

Yup, aware of that was referring to 3rd party cover for the drive there and back.

Once MOT has passed, I would set insurance to swap over at some date, so I can take that as proof for tax.

Not sure on impact of not having log book in my name, wonder if could do that in same hit too.

Mine doesn't, it just specifies that it has to belong to someone else.

Agreed, normally vehicle must insured in its own right which would then allow you to drive it third party with your ins.

Might get some useful info here:

http://www.carinsuranceexplained.com/car-insurance-explained/driving-other-cars-doc-car-insurance.html

From what I have read, it seems less common on fully comp policies now than it used to be and is a little ambiguous depending where you read it.

Your best bet is probably a quick phonecall to your insurance company for piece of mind.

it seems to be insurance company dependant on whether the car NEEDS to be insured or not.

I know for a fact Direct line DIDNT need it insured a few years ago as I spoke to them about it.

I have heard of other companies stating the opposite.

IMHO, ring your company and ask, and get the name of who you spoke to, and pref an email confirming.  Does seem a very grey area.
And 'if' the handbrake were to break while parked and cause an incident, then there would be no insurance in effect as you bum has left the seat.

Thats who my policy is with  :y

Yes, if your not in it, no insurance! Depending how things go, looking to get an MOT during day, don't want to have to leave it overnight or anything at the tester.

I'm sure you are permitted to drive to and from an MOT if the car is SORN, and regardless of whether it's passed or not, as long as it's not dangerous.

I would insure it properly, though. I'm sure your insurance company would have trouble understanding the fact that you are taking somebody else's car for an MOT. I doubt that'd wash at all, TBH.

FWIW, a single day's insurance for the 300ZX cost me £35 - hardly bank breaking, and 5 days (just in case it fails the first time) was £75..

Which I guess I need to do again now, seeing as I had the sill welded up yesterday!

I thought just Taxing the vehicle, automatically undoes the Sorn?

Yes, it does. You just have to tax it in the normal way. :y

Be interested to know if thats correct  :y

What if you try to tax a car with valid insurance & MOT, but the log book is in another persons name, can that be done?
