Remember I was going to respray my car ?. Well....
« on: 09 October 2009, 01:08:35 »

Remember I said I was going to respray my car a few weeks ago ?. Well ...

I watched a couple of respray DVD's and then set to work. They make it look so easy, howeer they have large compressors and well lit booths, I was spraying outside with compressors that didn't have quite enough air feed. Things got worse when part way through the base coat, the small machine mart compressor I was using for the mask air tripped out, and I had to quickly arrange to feed both the mask and spray gun from my Hydrovane 4cfm compressor. This didn't work too well !. However I finished it on a Friday afternoon at about 4:30, clear coat was nice and shiny, great.

I woke up the next day to find that the side nearest the house was still shiny, but the rest was now matt. It must have been the wind blowing past the garage that chilled the paint. So I had to rub down most of it and respray the clear coat earlier in the day. I got it prepared and resprayed on Sunday, finishing around 2:30. I spent the next couple of hours moving the car about to get the most of the sun to dry it, and fortunately it was OK, the next day the shine was still there.

So at long last I have a nice shiny car. The paint is not brilliant, but it looks considerably better than before.

Anyone else wanting to try this make sure you have a BIG compressor. An air mask takes about 4CFM a small spray gun takes up to 6CFM, and good guns take a lot more. Plus you will need a good 5 or 6 hrs with the temp above 16deg to cure the clear coat.

Good job.. :y

Wait some time until the paint is completely dry..
(Depends on your weather conditions)

you can check with finger nail in a lower point corner which is not visible..when you push with with finger nail if it doesnt let trace its dry..

Then you can use wet 2000 grid sanding and polisher to make the surface much smoother..Also will take most of the dust from the surface.. :y

Flys getting stuck weren't the problem, my Hydrovane  was struggling to feed both the mask and gun at the same time, and at certain points the gun stopped atomising the spray. Result runs in the clear coat. And also with the sun from cerrtain angles, you couldn't see if you were overlapping the previous run properly, so there are several dry patches.

But it was great fun, and for all my mistakes its a hundred times better than it was.  :y :y :y

Thats how I learn about doing things. I can't spray well, but I know the basics, and next time it will be better. Now to find somebody elses car to practise on  ;D ;D ;D
