Which engine to get ?
« on: 25 August 2007, 13:26:42 »

I need some help with my decisions, I'm after an Omega as a run around while I finnish off my Inetgra project.

I figured I might aswell get an estate so it can double up as a team van with plenty of room for drag tyres, tools, spare driveshafts ect...

I'll need to tow a car trailer ocasionally to mapping sessions, so whatever I get will need to be suitable for towing.

The 2.5 TD looks like a good option, but then after a bit of reading on here they sound a little fragile, what are peoples experiances with them ?

The other option is the 2.0 Petrol, what are they like on juice ? I do alot of town driving so I don't want to be filling up all the time.  I'm used to screamy little Hondas so I need schooling on these big engined cars.ich

I have a 2.2. I know it's a little (a lot) underpowered for most on here. I get about 28mpg on normal runs and just got 37mpg on a run from Cornwall to Bristol at a steady 70 mph on cruise control all the way. Could have more with the cruise off I'm sure.

Hope this helps.  :)

If you want to tow, go for a 2.5 manual or 3.0 auto. The TD works (had two) but wouldn't really rate them. get back into the v6 and youy will be glad.

2.5 manual estate is the best mix of power and economy.

2.0 is underpowered really and 3.0 while great fun, is going to be more thirsty...

I'm not really bothered about performance, I have my Integra for that.

What are the 2.5's like on fuel ?

tbh, the 2.5 is not much worse than 2.0 or 2.2 mpg wise, esp if you get a manual.  Average of low 30s mpg from manual 2.5 should be easily achievable (not when towing).  If you are doing lots of miles, LPG is an option as well.

The smaller petrols will tow fine, but the 6 cylinder engines will be so much better.

As you may have read, I have a bit of a hate relationship with the 2.5TD engine, but when its running, its not bad, and quite good when chipped (chipping will wreck the standard autobox though).

I have a 2.5 elite auto ... best towcar I have ever had .. even beats the old scorpio it replaced.

Towing a 1600Kg 'van I get between 18-20 mpg ( and I don't tow slowly !! very rarely do I cause a tailback ! and I suprise a few at the lights !!)

Solo at sensible speeds its 28-32 ... up to 35 on a motorway cruise .. at more outrageous speeds ( locked in 2nd with sports mode active) its around 15-20.

hope this helps
