To date, I've not bothered with Satnav.
Does make you lazy, but great for the last miloe of a journey. Great for speedcameras as well ::)

If you look at the SatNav display, you will see the blue arrow marking the location of where the SatNav thought I was. But to the left of it, you can see a dead-end road, and this is where I actually was. So it simply positioned me one street away....
Yes, street level satnav does move your position to 'likely' position - due to high buildings, I suspect weak satellite fix, hence may have been flicking between the 2...

I agree with the above, in areas that I know well I don't like the routes it is choosing, so I ignore it while driving to the general location of my destination, then I follow the SatNav only on the last mile.

There must be a crisis of faith.  You should still turn left is that's what the sat nav says.  Put your trust into the machine!!!!

We have a tom tom 710 and before that the 510 so far we have had no problems it has put us on the spot where we need to be everytime , especially handy with the speed cameras as there are loads round here.

I am a TomTom 6 (on PDA) user myself, and had 5 (and 3) previously.  It is a reliable bit of kit, only hassles have been inner ringroad in Brum (the tunnels caused hassle), and the occasional city location with tall buildings, where sometimes it may put you on a parallel road.

My 510 threw a wobbly a few months back......it kept insisting i was on a adjacent road about 300-500 yds away in towns.....and kept showing i was driving through fields when i was on a main A route.....really started to hack me off.......so called TOMTOM expecting to have to send it back to them and pay them to fix it......but blokey i spoke to seemed to know all about the problem.....'Its lost it sync with the satellites sir......you need to goto restore factory defaults in the menus and select that......give it 15 mins afterwards and it should be ok'.....so did that and it was  :y But it did loose all my fav locations stored and all my settings.....but then restoring factory defaults you would expect that!

I disagree. They are fantastic bits of kit, and incredibly useful, esp in the last mile of any journey, or if you have to deviate.

Of all the TomToms I have used (as well as other brands), I'never seen your problem, be it on the GOs, PDA versions, or Palm ones.

TomTom gives you a speed dependent prewarning (eg, if doing 30mph, 'in 100yrds, turn left'), then just before the turn, the command to turn.

The only change in volume is if you have speed dependent volume turned on, it gets louder as you go faster (actually, thats a lie, it reduces volume if you are slower, but thats a minor, but subtle point)
