Lucky brush with the Police...
« on: 01 September 2007, 07:15:44 »

I was travelling to work at shortly after 4am this morning, I had three lanes of totally empty motorway.

Needless to say, I was motoring!! At least 90mph.. truth be known probably more like 100. There was a police car in a really crafty spot, I had little time to break off any speed, and went past it probably well over 90.

There was I, bracing myself to be stopped and buggered... but he never even came after me.

Out of interest, what speed can you generally get away with on an empty motorway, before you are at risk of more than just an SP30?

I'm a very safe and calm driver, but I do seem to find the gas pedal hard to keep off, when I'm belting up the M5 to work at 4am!!

So this is how you earn your money then.............any vacancies ;D ;D

Lucky miss this morning then, although it must have been difficult for them to guess how much over 70 you were actually doing, as they were not moving, or they just could`nt be bothered to go any where, warm cosy perhaps a little sleepy............. they probably looked at each other and said

nnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

as for the main question no idea what speed you could get away with sorry

I too go to work early in the morning about 2am my time. Always at about 140-150mph   ::) ::) ::)

But then again there is no speed limit on the Autobahn i take

An Instant ban is 30 mph over the speed limit ie 100 on a 70 or 80 on a 50 and so forth

Its down to the police officer, My mate who is a traffic cop says really anything over 70 on the motorway and he should pull you over and give you a ticket but the police know that the motorway would get clogged if it went that slow.

So he says depending on the car and the time of day or night and the weather and how the driver is driving is all taken in to factor before he will pull someone over, unless they are spanking along and then it pull over time,

Sorry James, but the use of phrases like 'I am a safe and calm driver' and 'At least 90mph.. truth be known probably more like 100' do not go together. The speed limit is there for a reason. You cannot be in THAT much of a hurry!

Point taken... but I would never, ever be doing 90mph if there was any other traffic around.

Just to play devils advocate..

If I was in Germany, doing 140mph on an autobahn (which most drivers there regularly and legally do at all times) - would that make me a non-safe and non-calm driver, compared to doing 90mph on a dead motorway?

reminds me of an incident about 10 years ago as i joined the motorway sliproad in the dark - judging that i could accellerate away ahead of the car in lane 1, however as i accelerated in the rover Vi it seemed to match me - this carried on for a while untill its blue lights came on  :( unmarked T5 on the motorway at midnight and our relay seemed to go 60 - 90mph , no doubt he wasnt pushing it.. ;D

Bricking it like you James i moved in only for it to fly by me......i think sometimes, if bored, they just intimidate  :-/ fair enough as i learned my lesson early :y
