I'm desperately trying to change my diff oil as it's desperate!! Anyway, the haynes is about as usefull as a cheese grater and i don't know where the drain plug is! It's like it just doesn't exist!!

It's a limited slip diff if that makes any difference. The other thing is i un-did the level plug and my oil came pouring out! About 300ml i think, it shouldn't be filled this high though should it?? Maybe this has been my problem.....When i've been driving quite a bit, when i stop and pull away whilst turning, the diff. is REALLY not happy  :-/ Like it wants to lock up not happy! Hence i thought it was low or just had crap oil in there. Any help pleeeeeeeaaaaasseeeee

Best thing is to suck with something all the oil out and then refill it with VX diff oil and the LSD additive, there is no such a thing as a drain plug in the diff, only the gearbox has drainplug. You should fil it on level ground untill the oil is level with the level plug.

As omegav6cd says, there is no drain plug, as the oil in the diff should never need replacing and only ever need topping up in the event of a leak/repair. It looks as though someone has overfilled it in the past(though it beats me how they got that much in. Maybe jacked the car to a strange angle). If you have now drained the excess oil, the diff should be fine. If not, it is more than just an oil problem.

Checking the level is a bit like the gearbox on the autos. Whereas the gearbox needs to be running, in the case of the rear axle, the car needs to be moving thus sloshing the fluid around and giving a true level. This is best done using two people. One to drive the car in a straight line and the other to check the level. A crawler ( a board with wheels) is best for this and causes least damage to you, the oild level checker.

As soon as you have established the level, visit the nearest A&E department for treatment for burns, multiple grazes and of sourse that severed arm where your sleve got caught on the axle.

Well i had reversed the car up onto ramps, so i guess this could have been why it wasn't level and hence came out. I do want to replace it though, so will try 'syphoning' it out.

Don't you think it's a bit sh!t not having a drain plug?! I've already bought the correct oil and additive from Vaux so i'll get it in there even if it kills me! lol I think it'd really do it some good tbh, the stuff that came out is like brents finest crude!

I spose VX do it using a hundred yard long pit and an apprentice on rollerskates then.

The diff has Hypoid 80/90 + an additive (25% volume) if an LSD.

Or you can buy good Castrol or similar Hypoid LSD oil.....
