Sorry..but cant find on search...freeflow filters
« on: 19 October 2006, 16:11:57 »

Whats the opinion on replacement filters with added cold air feed to original airbox versus cold air induction kits?

Any advice and tips on this set up for a 2.5 V6 also whilst talking of mods....FSE boost valves...are they a 'must have' if opting for free flow air filter setup combined with free flow exhaust...again on a 2.5 V6?

Soz, can't help direct with query.

Others who have tried with air intake mods tend to report no performance increase, sometimes a performance drop.  Makes it noisier though.

There have been proper negative pressure tests conducted in the past and have shown that nothing beats the standard good quality paper filter unless you use a cone filter which then gives you the disadvantage of high intake temp.  So to answer your question no it doesn't worth getting a free flow filter as it is an absolute waste of money no matter if it is K&N or whatever. Stick to the standard arangement which is good enough for the 3 liter engine as well.

The air filter system is pretty free flow anyway....just change it regularly.

The mod of choice is a set of 3.0 cams....it works!

FSE boost valve....no!

are we talking standard 3.0 cams?

Whats the difference between stock 3.0 cams and pipercams for a 2.5?

Anyone point me in the direction for 3.0 cams? (apart from piper)

Get the cams from somebody breaking a 3.0 Omega (cost about a ton)....pop them in the 2.5 and 20+ ponies are all yours!

Am I right in saying that hydraulic lifters/followers means no need to shim the valves?

Clearances are automatically maintained?

Sorry, not had an omega before.

Unlikely you would need new followers, simply clean the ones you have and check for wear etc.

Take each follower and clean the exterior, remove any 'varnish' with Tcut or SolvolAutosol. You should now be able to see the wear pattern on the outside edge, compare with others and discard any that are obviously worn.

Now press on the follower centre to expell any old oil, you can use a vice for this but dont force them, allow time for the oil to be pushed out, and use something to protect the follower from the vice jaws or whatever you use to apply pressure.

Half fill an aerosol can lid with synthetic engine oil and drop the follower in, open side up. Press on the centre and you should see a small air bubble appear at the hole in the side. keep doing this till there are no more bubbles then empty of oil as before. Repeat until the oil comes out clean.

A good follower will spring back when the centre is pressed and will move freely, a damaged one will either be stuck, fully depressed or wont compress at all.
