radiator - temp low!!!
« on: 07 November 2006, 14:37:34 »

2000 2.2 CDX 150K

Prior to changing radiator temp guage read a steady 85 ->95 . Changed rad as wanted air/oil cooler for autobox towing purposes and original radiator was getting very weak around oil cooler pipes - tests also showed was working about 50% efficiency
New rad and oil cooler fitted BUT  engine warms as normal to about 85/90 ish then temp drops to about 80. (So thermostat working)Sat with engine running for 30 mins temp only rose to 85 no more.
The only time temp rose to normal (85/95) was when towing a 1.5 ton caravan up Rhualt hill on A55 -roadworks so crawled up 1 mile hill in about 1.5 hours lots of stop starts and other cars, vans etc falling by the way side steam etc coming from bonnet/s- the stench of burning /steamed rubber was quite strong as well -not mine theirs!!?
Now weather getting colder and wanting lots of heat inside (heater works well but doesn't burn my toes like before)can I safely blank of part of radiator till spring or any other suggestions

thanks

What happens if the climate is put onto eco.....?

Still could be the stat not fully closing.

Sound similar to my problem. Just bought a new thermostat but need to find time to get it changed.

95 sounds a bit hot for a 2.2

Ive only seen mine get that hot in the summer when outside temp was high 20's , then the rad fan was in turbine mode mode trying to cool it down. Towing a caravan tho 95 is prob the norm. So if it was normally at 95 (not towing) old radiator was prob the cause as its running cooler now

Mine usually sits at 90 in traffic, then rad fan keeps cutting in ( but in slow mode)
85 when moving and never goes below 85.

80 does sound a bit cool.....and as Mark say rad stat could not be closing properly

Having eco on doesnt make any diff to the temp on mine.....so i suspect Mark is getting at, if it runs hotter with eco on.....then stat is probably the fault....as it should have shut fully and the aircon fan running wont make any difference to the temp  :-/ Im sure he'll let me know if im way out on that one  :y

I think what Mark is getting at with the ECO thing - if ECO off, one of the rad fans will be switched on anyway (hence cooling it), with ECO on, this will be off...

Odd, as there will be no rad fans running....

Yes, sorry, confused myself for a mo. Yes ECO off (a/c on) kicks in another rad fan...
