There must be a demon in that car.  I think that it should be exorcised by fire before it spreads!  Kinda like my laptop  >:(

I still can't believe the bad luck of that happening to you so soon after.   :o

Cheers guys.

I can only think that the God of VX Dealers was watching and saw that his useless flock was being deprived of money they don't deserve and decided to undo all the work done!  Bloody spooky part is that aside from the water pump, this has taken out everything that had been changed!!

What a bugger.

Have heard a bit of what happened...any photos or a full description of the damage?
I can only guess that the aux belt snapped half way across, one half kept rotating and the other half split lengthways and worked like a flail on cable tray, hoses etc. I have seen this happen on a washing m/c multi-v belt but not on a car before.
I have heard of one other car where an aux belt snapped and got into the cambelt but looking at the covers you wouldnt think it possible.

Cipher is breaking a 2.5 if anyone fancies doing an engine swap

I will post some pictures up later, but what appears to have happened is that the pully on the Aux tensioner disintegrated and shredded the belt, inside looked like a pile of black spaghetti had been dropped in the engine bay.  When I took off the cam cover (which was perfectly intact) there was a couple of bits of belt inside there.  I can only assume that it wandered around the teeth on the cam pullys and let the cam belt slip over the teeth.  Annoyingly, to look at the cambelt and tensioners etc, it all looks perfect, just miles out of timing.  I cranked it round so cam 1 was at the timing mark and 2 was 4 or 5 teeth out and 3 was 4 out and 4 was 3 out!

If anyone fancies this, let me know, it had just passed the MOT the week after the rebuild and it was going like a dream before that.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck, fingers crossed for you and your next car hopefully you will have better luck next time. Its real shame after all the time money and effort put into the car by yourself and others on the forum.

Here are some photos of the damage!

THe aux tensioner

Cam 1 - rotated to its timing mark

Cam 2

Cam 3

Cam 4

The rest of the cambelt and tensioners/rollers which appear to be perfect.

The lovely mess of the Aux Belt.

I will stick it in the for sale section if anyone fancies a go, failing that it will either be
the scrappies or E-Bay. As a matter of interest, what might I get for it in this state?

Cheers
Merv

I know how it feels as I had a V6 volvo that let go after only 400 miles.

Hope you have more luck with the next one

Good luck with the next one. They say omega ownership is like marriage but
divorce is so much cheaper.
Good luck. :'(

I was sorry to hear what happened after all the work the guys put in. Out of interest, someone's selling a pair of heads from a 3.0L '95 on fleebay for £160. It ends in about a day. (why not wait until the auction finishes then offer him £100!). Is it not worth one more go?. I mean you know the car now, and its faults. If you buy another you could have a whole load of new faults to go through.
