I've cleaned my breather pipes today but..........
« on: 18 November 2006, 18:53:59 »

I have spent most of today taking the top parts of the engine apart in order to clean the breather pipes as I know my rocker covers are leaking (next job)
So I read the thread about doing the job a few times before getting started.

In the HOW TO thread it mentioned being careful with the black breather box when removing the ecotec top, but after I removed the four breather pipes off the ecotec bit, undid all the bolts, removed the idle valve, I lifted it off exposing the O rings, I never really came across a black box or a hidden TORX bolt holding the black box to the plenum!!!!!!!!

I have a 2.5 V6 1995, could this be the reason why I don't seem to have this box as my car is older???????

I then followed the four breather pipes down from the ecotec top to a metal compartment between the engine and bulkhead. I pulled all four off and using carb cleaner gave them a good clean, I'm glad I did as there was real sludge everywhere................the previous owner had clearly never done this before so I am worried about the oil/oil filter (which I will also do very soon)

The bigger pipe that splits into two had the most gunk in it................a good tip as mentioned on the HOW TO thread put it on your garden hose as the pressure really cleans it out (and dont point it anywhere near your house!!!!!)

Also I haven't found a pipe with a brass hole in it ?????? as mentioned on the HOW TO thread, the closest thing I found is when pulling off one of the smaller hoses it exposed a brass part that is on the metal box I mentioned earlier, this has a minute hole in it, this was when I used a stiff wire to clean it out.

Next............... what or where is the electrical box? that is mentioned in the HOW TO thread, is it one of the four pipes I have cleaned or is it a seperate pipe somewhere?

Sorry for all the questions, I apologise if I am stupid but this is the first time I have ventured into the engine bay since buying the car, so I am trying to learn as I go.

If Ronald Mcburger is around, the author of the HOW TO thread, thankyou for taking the time to write it originally, hope you can answer my questions :y

Cheers Kevin

OK did you remove the plastic bit with ecotec on it from the plenum?
That bit is only a clip on cover, underneath is the hidden torx bolt to remove the bit the four pipes connect to from the body of the plenum so you can clean it.

Oh no, I just undid the four bolts and the other side bits, and it all came off,
quite easily actually!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  [smiley=shocked.gif]
Are you going to tell me I've broken the hidden screw under the plastic ecotec bit? :'(
My cars still in pieces tonight. I was going to put it back together again tomorrow, everythings in my garage, so I'll re check the plenum tomorrow,
Thanks for replying
