2.2 facelift noisy engine
« on: 12 December 2006, 17:05:48 »

I've had my 2001 2.2CD for about six months now, but there are a few faults that are niggling me!

1. The top end is quite clattery, it's always been the same but sounds like a quiet diesel when going through tunnels! are these engines always this vocal? if not is there a test to see if the hydraulics tappets are ok? the car has had a new cambelt some 8000 miles ago(at least thats what the service receipt says!) and has done 91000 miles approx.
2. Despite new lower wishbones on the front suspension, the car still doesn't track quie straight. I am going to get the tracking properly checked/adjusted, but in the meantime do these cars suffer any particular problems in this area?
3 Alarm!!!! like a lot of others it keeps going off at random(when activated), I've heard that the bonnet sensors can be troublesome, and that simply taping it dowm might do the trick, any thoughts?

Hi,

I have a 2.2 and its not the smoothest engine, however once its warm it sounds good. Its clattery when cold, but after 10 mins or so purrs nicely. When was the oil last changed, and what type do u have in there?  If u say it sounds like a diesel, then something is odd cause mine sounds far from a diesel when warm.

To get the car tracked take it to Wheels in motion: http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk/

The above place is HIGHLY recommend by people here, one of the admins called TheBoy here has his car tracked there and its used as the bench mark  :y

The guy who runs that is a registered user here, i forget his username someone will confirm and u can PM him.

With the alarm are you sure its the alarm going off (ie horn) or is it just the siren? The bonnet catch can be greased up, but if u get 3 short beeps sometimes when getting out of the car the backup alarm battery is dying. I need to disconnect mine, as it caused a power drain to my battery  :(

Welcome to the forum cj.

First off, when you say quite clattery, the engine does not tick over as quietly as the V6's., but they're not that noisy.

Alignment click here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1161091674.

Bonnet sensor, make sure it moves up and down freely.

Thanks for your inputs!  With regard to the engine, perhaps I should listen to a few others before I get paranoid! thanks for the wheel alignment contact.

Re the alarm, it only ever goes off after I've left the car for anything between 10 mins. and half an hour (as far as I know!), and it's lights and sound so it probably isn't the alarm battery, but I will properly check the bonnet sensor as suggested, any idea where it is?

Thanks to both of you

As others have said, 2.2 may make a little bit of noise when cold, but should quieten downafter a few mins. Change the oil far more regular than Vx say - I do mine every 3 - 4k.  May be worth doing cambelt/waterpump if you don't know history...

Mines quite noisy especially after it's warmed up; fortuneatly well insulated cabins so don't hear much with the windows closed, I know what you mean about sounding like a quiet diesel especially if your parked up by a wall and open the window god they sound crap, but apparently these engines are renowned for being noisy and occassionly someones lucky enough to get a quietish one!

Welcome cj  :y

Must say my 2.2 is pretty quiet hot or cold.....it sounded noisy when cold when i first had it and thought this was normal......but on trip to vx dealer for camblet change....they told me it had exhaust manifold leak....they changed the exhaust manifold (cracked apparently) and since then its pretty quiet.....sure you havent got a ticking type noise? when cold....which would indicate an exhaust manifold leak.

TB has heard mine.....dont think he would say its noisy  :-/

One of the quieter 2.2s, but then it was warm, so never heard from cold...

There was something wrong with that engine - it was missing a couple of cylinders and missing around 60bhp ;)

My 2.2CD nice and quiet all the time.

AA - What's all that oil doing around your throttle body - time for a power rinse???

Taken before I first cleaned the throttle body and replaced the gasket.
