I did my cam cover gasket today!
« on: 02 January 2007, 15:34:39 »

Wasnt as bad as i thought it was going to be.......heres progress pics....and thing i will add....that Marks guide didnt mention for a 2.2......was you have to unplug the crank sensor and get the wiring out the way.....also you have to get the cable tray thats sits across the front of the engine unhooked from sitting on the cam cover......but apart from that Marks guide was excellent  :y

Admins.....Please feel free to nick and add these pics to Marks guide  :y

Pic1......before i did anything....spot the rogue cam cover bolt....top right  >:(

Pic2.....removed the plug for the coil pack and removed the ecotec plastic strip

Pic3 ....removed the coil pack

Pic4 ....removed the 3 breather pipes

Pic5....off with the cam cover.....after removing the 9 proper bolts and the 1 rogue one!

Pic6/7 Shows where oil should not be......in the centre channel

Pic8 ....Cleaned it best i could

Pic9....Where I decided Mark meant shove the black goo......right place??  :-/

Pic10....Underneath of cam cover with new gasket and 10 new o rings fitted

Pic11....Back on with the cleaned up cam cover with 10 correct bolts all tightened to 8NM

Pic12 ....All back together......and the engine didnt even explode when i started it  :)

And if can do that job.....anyone can!  :y

Good job!

Did mine too just a few days before Christmas, and was surprised at how much better the engine ran without oil in the plug wells! (Having said that I changed the leads and plugs too).

You dont need the black goo all round the cam bearing cap, just the corners, did you put any on the rear half moons to....or did I miss that bit!

I wrote the maintenance guide some time ago off the top of my head so not surprised there were a few bits missing.

Excellent Job TD, very impressed  :y

Makes me wonder if I should give mine a clean!

It sounded like a big job when it was being described, but looks very straight forward!

Any improvement in the way it runs?

Ah rite....tho i guess it wont harm...i did put it all the way round coz there was evidence of old goo going all the way over before i cleaned it up.

I did put it on the rear half moons too.....again there was evidence of old goo there before i cleaned it....but as you didnt mention it in the guide wasnt sure if vital......and no im not taking it apart again to take a pic of that  ;D

Only other thing i noticed, as i have a torque wrench now.....is how tight 25NM is, for the spark plugs! Ive never tightened plugs up that tight before!

Cheers Tunnie.....Tho i wouldnt go taking it apart for the fun of it......remember i had oil where it shouldnt be......plus it was escaping at the back of the cam cover too.

Point taken, i noticed in your second picture with the coil pack still in it was very brown at towards the back.

Took the plastic ecotech strip off yesterdays at TB's mine was clean down there apart from a leaf!!  :o

True as there will not be any sludge staining from ancient oil etc.
