Maybe the wind & rain has got in somewhere it shouldn't have?
As someone elses signature says, have you checked the fuses?
Assuming it's turning over & not firing - petrol? OR - Have you moved some wires around/loosened a connector?

its just strange as it ran for about 40 seconds then just stopped,so it fired up ok,it seems like a fuel problem ,but got fuel ,any ideas on how to check fuel is pumping,is itpossible immobiliser, the only wires disconnected were in the loom above the spark plugs on passenger side of engine

Fuse for fuel is 20a - this guide will show you its location http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1161602008 - , but takes a lot to blow, but car would just die as you've described so it's possible.  Worth a try - 20 sec job.  :y

That's the idle control valve (IVC). Check that the plug is fully in because if not the engine will die and not start unless you give it a tiny bit on the accelerator.

Sounds like you have a dodgy connection waiting for the next dark wet cold night.
Do a paper clip check and post the results, there should be fault codes stored to point you to which device or sensor was at fault.

Where is the exhaust noise coming from?
If its in the engine bay its most likely to be exhaust manifold gaskets or possibly a warped or cracked manifold, otherwise work back along the system. The mid boxes can sound noisy if the internal baffles have rotted out, there wont be any external blow but may rattle if thumped by hand.

exhaust noise form engine bay....

might it be EGR related??

it's precisely what I've just had fixed.....      all of a sudden the engine ran lumpy and threatened to stall at tick over.... and the exhaust sounded bad at the front....

turned out the EGR had "failed dramatically" .... replaced, and all sorted.....
