Cam belt kit worries
« on: 24 January 2007, 03:38:38 »

Hi all, I have ordered this cambelt kit from ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330077788046&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=014

Now my car is a 1999 V6 with engine no 08350109. I am not sure if this kit is the correct one as I know there was a different one for the older Omegas. Will it be ok for my car?....please say yes lol ;)

I wont be fitting it but I have a friend who is a mechanic and will be doing it cheap for me so will I be handing him the correct kit to fit?.

Don't recognise the part number from Mark DTM's price guide.

Have you received it yet?

Don't let him do it without the proper locking/timing kit, no matter how good/experienced he thinks he may be. They simply cannot be done properly without this...

Looks like its the earlier kit I have got, even tho in the listing it says for "Omega B 1994-03 X25XE X30XE engines"
Its a bit misleading for someone not really in the know :(

Didn't the early ones have a 'D' on the idler mounting plate and the latter ones begin with 'E' (ie EA or EB). Wasn't the difference that the old ones were good for 40k and the new ones good for 80k at the time. I know you could use the new one instead of the old one so presumably you can use the old one instead of the new one provided you replace it at 40k or 4 years. You have to replace the new one at 40k or 4 years anyway.

With this in mind I don't see that it makes any difference which one is used, unless there is an extra bolt hole in the new ones that isn't there in the old ones.

You need a 9201887.....the difference between the two are as follows:

The backing plate on which the tensioner is fitted is different
The lower idler is mounted in a different position
The cambelt markings are different....

So, if you mark the new belt up differently (assuming you can see the old markings on the old belt!) and swap the backing plates over.....you can fit it......not easy though.

Gwilym and I had this problem when doing his 2000 3.0 MV6 cambelt change. The backplate etc was the same, but the belt markings were different.

Confused the heck out of us for a while!!

I received it today in the post, it has EB on the backing plate. Its a Gates kit and there are marks on the belt on the top and on the bottom, not sure if that means a set for old and a set for the newer car?.

Sometimes the generic kits have both sets of markings (normaly different colours).

Its the backing plate that will cause you the next headache.

I called the seller up and he is going to ship me the correct kit provided I pay shipping both ways, not bad really considering. Thanks for the help and lesson learned, I will check more carefully next time I buy a part I need ;)
