I was wondering if any one gets this symptom with what I think is the Wishbone bushes (droplinks have been changed and can't see any visible wear in bushes);  e.g exiting a dip in the road I get a knock/clonk then later in to the journey it will knock/clonk one more time at some stage , then all is ok for several days even that same dip won't cause it to knock, almost as if bush shifts out of place then back into place!!
What do you reckon guys?

Antiroll bar bushes can cause a small knock as well.

Jack it up, check for play, that will locate problem...

Cheers for that, I have already changed the anti-roll bar bushes, just cannot find any play anywhere apart from some movement in the wishbone bushes , which only seem to be the compliance of the bushes I think, as hard to tell if it's excessive or not!

Check springs are OK...not missing part of bottom coil?

Are top strut bearings free? If seized the spring can move on spring seat when parking etc and returns to normal posn with a clonk when spring is unloaded, eg going into a dip. You would expect to have some funny steering behaviour as well though.

Yes mate, checked the springs they're ok, top strut bearings appear free and  all moves when turning as it should; steering is quite good on this car apart from some tram lining due to the usual wide tyre syndrome, but even this has improved since fitting new steering idler arm. Have to say was a bit pissed off when I got the MOT'd the other week and although it passed , the advisories were: Front brake imbalance, hopefully cured by new disks/ pads and bled @ VX using Tech 2 (never really noticed it when braking')  then rear shocks slight misting of oil, replaced these and finally Steering idler, replaced this.
Sickening a car that is 6 years old and only 52,000 on the clock, I must say I've never had so many issues at one time with any other cars I've had in the past, looks like you have to drive these damn things with kid gloves!! never really enjoy driving this car as I'm always waiting for the next thing to go wrong or some knock or other  >:(.

Clam down!

Brakes are a service item.....if it needed tech2 then some numpty has got air in the ABS system which is simply a case of incompetence.

Shocks.....seems to be more common on 2.2's, do you do lots of town driving, any speed humps? well past there best at 50K miles anyway.......on any car.

Steering idler...as above.....are the roads where you normaly drive poor?

Wishbones as per above...

I can only summise that you have poor roads and/or lots of speed humps?

Calmed down a bit now Mark!
No, roads round my way are ok and always avoid anywhere that has speed humps etc where possible, but saying that maybe previous owner encountered a lot of them. So you reckon it's got to be the wishbones then Mark?

Mines only done 43k and wishbones failed before 39k - both sides.  But I have speed bumps on daily run to work  :( My steering was fine and just slight knock/clunk after exiting bumps.

Bought a new set from www.buypartsby.co.uk if you need some. :y

They're not genuine Vx (I've just fitted a pair).

No there not Vx ones, the ones from VSC (ebay) are better quality for a little extra money.

Jack the car up and inspect the bushes.....on the front bushes you are looking for splits inside (normaly pretty obvious) and on the rear ones any signs of bare metal.

Also check the rear bolts are tight.....they should be done up to about 120Nm +30deg....if there loose then the bolts clonk in the holes.....worth a check as its a nice easy one...

Good point Mark, out with the Torque wrench this weekend I think, although not sure if I've got room under the car with it on it's wheels, do you reckon tightening with it jacked up would be ok and not knacker the bushes?

Rear ones can be done with it jacked up.....reality is that you can get to the rear bottom nut with it on the deck....
