Replacement engine
« on: 04 February 2007, 13:58:51 »

I need a replacement engine for my Omega 1999 2.5 V6. Will one from a M reg be ok and fit the car. I have the chance of one for £300 but there is no milage info just that they say it runs fine and doesn't burn oil etc and has a 3 month warranty. I have a guy who will fit it for £250 quid. Is the price for the engine ok or am I better getting a newer one even though they seem pretty hard to find so far especially as I am in Scotland :(

too dear!!! you can buy a whole car with verifiable mileage and take the engine out yourself. Then scrap the car and make your money back.

I looked at buying a 2002 engine for a 2.6 v6 (y26se) with 31k on it for £250 recently...gives you some considoration of the price

I wouldnt be putting an engine that old in a newer car....

Where in Scotland are you?

I am in Edinburgh, I just spoke to the guy with the engine again and he tells me it has done 68000 miles and had the cambelt done 10000 miles ago. I fine it hard to believe a 1995 car has only done that kind of milage. I am just finding it VERY hard to source an engine, any more feedback would be appreciated :)

I think a piston has snapped or something similiar according to the AA man and my machanic friend. They both said it was cheaper to replace it. It lost power and sounds like there is a little man inside it hitting the engine with a sledge hammer, it is really loud and very terminal sounding. The current engine has done 130000 miles.

Do not buy a pre 1998 power plant.....there were quite a few changes made to the engine to make it smoother and quieter...

Thanks for that :) I am half wondering whether it may just be as cheap to get another car but I love the one I have. I have another place I can call tomorrow who say they have a couple of Omegas in so I will keep my fingers crossed :)

So what bits would be different, surely all the old bits from my current engine would do. Would the engine mounts be different etc. Would it mean a lot of extra work for the guy who will be fitting the engine, ie is he going to be likely to charge me a lot more for fitting it.

Its buisness as usualy realy.....you normaly get the two side by side and populate the replacement.

Most scrap yards are not going to provide and engine with pwoer steering pump etc on it anyway!

Is this engine ok?, planning to buy it tomorrow as my mechanic says £100 extra so £350 to fit it all in. Will it fit with all my old steering pump, air conditioning, manifolds etc on it?
