Hi,

The fact that the A/C needs recharging will not affect the heater.  At first guess, there may be an air lock in the system somehow.  Either that of the system needs resetting.  From memory, I think that you need to hold either the Auto and Off buttons down for 5 or more seconds, or just the Auto.  I am sure that somebody will correct me on this! :)

JIt could be the Heater Bypass Valve going faulty, but in view of the fact that the pipes in the footwell are hot, this is only a possible.  Check if you are loosing coolant and, if so, it could well be the valve leaking.  Get it sorted ASAP as you will destroy the DIS pack if allowed to continue.

I hope that this helps.

Opps, sorry, there is a post in FAQ or Maintence Guides with vac pipe diags...

Sorry, not laughing, should have clarified where to look.

The heater system is vac operated, just wondering if the heat blend flaps are not working, stuck on cold...

If both feed and return pipes to matrix are hot, then coolant is flowing through matrix OK. Problem has to lie with heater system....

The DIS in the ignition coils.  On the older models, it is a one piece unit which contains a coil for each cylinder in the engine.  This provides the spark for the spark plugs to operate.  On newer models, the coils are directly above the spark plug.

No need to apologise - we all have to learn the terms at some point!

Regarding the heat bend flaps, these are driven by motors and, as previously said, these work by vacuum.  Beyond this, I do not know much more I am afraid.  Does your air recirculation work?  This is the switch with the symbol of a car and an arrow going round inside the car if that makes sense.  Press it when the radio is off, and you may be able to hear a slight hiss which is the system operating.

The climate models have vacuum valves up behind glovebox. I think the rotary controls type have no extra vacuum valves...

If the amount of messages I've had off people on another forum this is starting to be a common problem.

This only applies if you are certain you're getting hot water through the matrix and you get cold/cool air blown in the front - the back air vents should blow hot.

The fix for me was the little plastic arms that connect to the diverter servo motors at the bottom of the heater box.

Here's how I fixed the O/S

1. Remove the cover over the pedals (held on with plastic screw things)
2. Remove the long air vent over the pedals (held on with 1 pushpin plastic fitting - pull the pin out and the spreader peg will follow)
3. The piece of centre console that extends into the footwell on the O/S can be lifted up off its clip to make access easier. It will then flop about enough to make getting at the screws easier.
4. Remove the plastic cover from the servo at the bottom of the heater box (behind the end of the leg on the console you unclipped in step 3)
5. Undo the 2 torx screws and remove the motor
6. Undo 2 more torx screws and you should be able to see where the plastic leg has dropped off.
7. Fix problem  & put back together!

I heated the end of the leg with a hot air gun and bent the legs together a bit to make the connection tighter. It's not dropped off since.

From what I worked out the vac pipes operate the bypass valve and fan motor speed. All the vents are operated by little electric servos - hence you can reset the flaps without the engine running and no vacuum present.
