Noisy Cats!!!!
« on: 15 March 2007, 10:31:35 »

Hi Guy's..... :y
I have just had to have both Cats replaced on my 2.5V6....(long story)
they sounds really noisy..... i took it back to the Exhaust place about 5 days after the work was done and they said this was ok. they told me they will take a little while (aprox 2000miles) to get some carbon through them and then they will quieten down.

I know about as much about this sort of thing as Phill Tufnell knows about loans according to the TV Ad   :-/....are they telling me a load of old pony or are they right.....???

Hmm, if they are not original GM ones, and are pattern parts that are of sub-standard quality then they will be noisy... I have this problem on mine at the moment because the previous owner had it fitted - I intend to change the whole lot when money permits to a GM system..

Thats probably not what you want to hear  :-/ I can't say for sure if they will get quieter after some use, someone else on here may know...

Cheers,

Chris.

Personally I think that is a load of horse...poop!

They are cheap (compared to genuine Vx) replacements with little sound insulation.

You can try exhaust wrap on the piping (not the cat itself) to quieten things down a bit. I am told it does help.

Just come back from the Exhaust shop now (it is a reputable independant place) i am sure TD will know it  (Swindon boy).... they tell me give it another 1000 miles and i will notice a difference.... if not come back..... suppose can't say fairer than that!

until then i will have to pretend i am driving a 1980 SD1 with a 3.5 V8 in it!!!!!! 8-)

Given that they very rarely fail, it would have been an option to buy a pair of good second hand ones.....

I'm not buying the sooted up buisness....how much soot and how thick do they think its going to get in a stinking hot cat and downpipe.....

What make was it....a naff Armin/Timax affair.....

I'm not buying it either, back in  the old days of leaded fuels and none Cats etc, Exhausts would carbon up, quietening them down a bit, but these days it's a different story everythings too clean and more efficient!!
Cheers Pete
