head gasket???
« on: 15 March 2007, 00:00:48 »

a few week back, the aux belt snapped whilst in the outside lane of the local motorway.
so a very nice man took me home .......
we finally got around to fitting a new one (costing too much to run the other car), to which it seems to be blowing water out of the filler cap.
the temp' gauge did not ever read above 95c ( this was driving up a steep slope) and usually ran at 92c.

i have checked the thermostat, it is opening....
i did however, need to give myself some more time, so when the thermostat was out i drilled 3 holes on the PCD of the bypass hole, this has effectively lowered the running temp by 3 - 7c, so it is running at a temp of 87c - 90c,
.
this is still over pressurising!

if the head gasket is gone , what price are we looking at to fix it ?

getting a little fed up now, the saying is 'Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious' ( i prefer  'loves Over-Taking, Usually Speeding) for a lotus, at the moment however, i seem to  trust it much more the the meega.

Well I would be suprised if it was the HG.

Much more likely to be the heater bypass valve.
Check for signs of water leakage at back of engine (drivers side) , often dripping down to bell housing.

If this leaks it forces water out under pumping then sucks air into the system. This then quickly causes overpresurising of the system.

Water pump OK? I seem to remember they are a little fragile on the BMW diesel......could the impeller have broken up causing the original snapped belt and the overheating now?

Ah yes, it's a diesel...

As I recall the water pumps had those stupid plastic impellors, which (not suprisingly!) failed. Would certainly cause big problems...

ok, i will have a look at the water pump first, then look for any leaks on the hbv.
my journey to work is 20mile each way, and i loose about an inch out of the header tank total.
today however, i could not here the hissing from the cap, then again , it was only 3C outside temp

i would have posted earlier, but have been a little busy on the fun car.

this is the confusing parts :-?
the system (according to the clock) is not overheating, just over-pressureising !
i went for a day and a half, and only topped up 1cm of water, however, the winter has come back, and owing to the previous over-pressurising, i had lost all antifreeze.
so today at lunchtime, i added a Ltr of solution to the header tank, (i did let some water out of the top hose to acomidate this )

well.... it overpressureised big time. why????????????
it was ok before.....

have i got an airlock? water pump?
TBO, i am fed up of spending money on it,
any body want to buy it??

sod it , i'm havin another can of caffrey's

If the pump has failed it's entirely possible that the sensor for the temperature gauge is seeing normal temperatures whilst, elsewhere in the engine, water is boiling due to insufficient circulation of the coolant. This would cause the pressurisation you are seeing.
