Hi to all, I have just brought a 1995 Vauxhall Omega 2.5 V6 CDX automatic. I got it cheap off ebay with a noisy cam. Well It would not tick over at first as the tick over was to slow, So I put a new Idle speed adjuster valve, and that sorted out the tick over (well mainly, but still a bit slow) the right hand head has very noisy cams the left is OK, it was missing a bit but found one HT lead broke so replaced that. But the main problem is that when I pull off it has the power of a lawn mower with out a engine, and if you accelerate hard you get the air cleaner box vibrate like mad. my other car is a 2.4 straight 4 Toyota previa and it put my Omega to shame power wise, I have checked that none of the brakes are stuck on, and non are. I am in a wheelchair fighting bowel cancer, and getting in and out of my previa is to hard. I am not got enough money to put it in to vauxhall. so any Idear  PLEASE PLEASE get in touch.

My initial thoughts say DON'T DRIVE IT ANY MORE (don't even start it up!)   !

It sounds like the cam timing has slipped a couple of teeth.

If I am right, you have been extraordinarily fortunate.

As Laidback says, don't drive anymore till you have more information.
Post up some more of your details, and hopefully someone will be kind of local to you.

As others have said, when I read, my immediate thought was cambelt. This needs to be double checked immediately.  Cambelts on these v6s need a locking/timing kit to do.

Hi to all, very sorry I forgot to put I live in Northampton. and a big thank you to all of your help, when I get my next DLA money I will find a local garage and have the cam belt checked. Thank you to you all.

Northampton os not too bad, couple of our members should be able to come over and have a look.

When I said don't drive it, that does include getting it to a garage!
If you were to start it again there is every chance the belt would come off and then you are looking at a BIG job.

Also, a garage would charge you far too much and probably not do the job properly (most don't know how to do the timing)!

Sure we can get you sorted out without too much trouble. Know what it feels like when health problems stop you being independent. Now you are not on your own.

Sorry i cannot help more directly, but being in Scotland, the commute would be too far. There are members more local to you that are well capable to help.

I can not thank you all enough, you all know your stuff about cars, I wish there was a site for cancer, thius is my 3rd time with cancer, but I am not out yet.
  I have phoned up a few garages and one s&s autos do alot of Omega`s and I will get my car to them in four weeks when I get my DLA money. I am a member of auto home and they will take my Omega to the garage for me.
                             It is so nice to have all of you lot close on here.

It may be better for you if someone from the forum comes over and does it for you. Even Vauxhall dealers are known to say you don't need selaant when doing cam covers, for example, but the insructions suppied by Vauxhall say you do.

I too am disabled, it took me a year to do my heads with the neighbours help but I really wanted to do them - even 20 miinutes a couple of times a week gave me something better to do than count the wheels on the passing trains :-)

The neighbour has a Citroen C3 and that has very high front seats, I find it much easier to get in and out of than my Omega. The Exclusive has one of those selectronic gear boxes that you can drive in automatic mode and it is available on Motability. It does take all of the mobility allowance to lease a new one though so may not leave anything left to put fuel in it.

Glad you have found the site Jason, and it sounds like it was just in time!  
If you get a chance to trawl the back pages of the forum you will see the unrivalled community spirit herein, and there is no doubt that if someone can, then they will. I'm sure that somebody will be able to have a look at the motor for you before you take it to the garage, and even if you only get an honest assessment of the problem you will be in a better position to deal with the repairs.
Don't think it will come to that though, the forum has a habit of having 'parties' .........

Hi a big thank you to you all, you were spot on, My wife took the haynes manual and kit to the car ( she normaly does sit on lawn mower engines) and stripped it down to the cam belt, and yes the inlet cam on the right bank was well out, so she took the old cam belt off, got all of the timing marks set and put a brand new cam belt kit on. It now goes like a rocket, I dont drive it now, I just aim it and press the peddle. My wife done it all in 4 hours (not bad for a woman)
           So with the info from all of you lot and the work from my wife I am on the road again. So in any of you are in Northampton and see a dark Green Omega Estate going at hyper speed with some people hanging on in side, it it me.

Wow! That's some wife you've got there!   I'm not sure I'd let mine anywhere near my cam belt. I'm not sure she'd go anywhere near it either!  

It would be worth borrowing the proper setting tool for the cam belt if she didn't use it this time, just to check that the timing is spot on. It enables much more accurate alignment of the cam timing. The markings on the covers aren't really adequate.  There will be someone on here willing to loan you one, for sure.

It's also worth mentioning that the tensioner pullies actually go before the cam belts as a rule on these engines, so if they weren't changed this time have a look at the history and make sure there's a record of them being changed. They, along with the cam belt, should be replaced every 40K miles.
