Fianlly managed to get the car running properly again this afternoon in readiness for ti's MOT retest tomorrow ( friday 13th )

Anyway, i managed to pull the handle off my glove box a few weeks back after i'd locked it and then couldn't unlock it and tonight it looks like the mechanism that hold it shut has failed totally as it won't stay closed at all now (currently held shut with duck tape).

After having a poke around i've not been able to find how you get the door off to be able to look at the locking mechanism.  

Secondly, now that the nice weather is upon us i'd like to be able to use the sunroof but it doesn't work, i sort of managed to get it fully open today but then it would only close halfway and i ended up having to crank it the rest of the way by hand.  When i bought the car i was told it had a faulty sunroof but read somewhere about resetting the controller.  

Had a go at resetting a while ago but it didn't seem to do anything, i tried replacing the controller with another from the breakers but that didn't even move the sunroof at all.

It's a bit poo when you have to open and close your sunroof with a screwdriver

mine's not quite set right ... as when you tilt it open and close it again it sits slightly below the roof line so at speed you get wind noise. However if you close it, slide it back a bit then close again it sits fine ... just need to close roof by hand, remove motor, run the calibration sequence with the motor disconnected, then refit - that should do it.

As for the glovebox, you'll need to remove the entire glovebox, from memory then there's two pins which form the hinge at the bottom which you need to remove along with a slip which holds the end of the gas damper strut in place. From then the complete door comes off and you can then get to the screws which hold the internal cover in place, the mechanism is then accessible underneath ...

When removing the glovebox there's a hidden screw on the left, IIRC you need to remove the air vent & side panel. There's also three under the airbag which you can lift up (no need to remove) to gain access....

I think it must depend on how old the car is. Mr Haynes describes 4 screws but the apparently facelift cars, and certainly my MINI facelift 99 car, have a 5th screw as you say on the left hand side towards the top. A bugger finding it when you trust Mr Haynes!

ah yes ... but Mr. Haynes in his infinite wisdom says you need to remove the steering wheel in order to remove the instrument panel ... but others know better

BTW, This may be true for early models that do not have a tilting steering wheel...

Just need to remove the upper cowling.
