2.2 auto, starts but will not run past 1000 rpm
« on: 18 April 2007, 13:35:41 »

New to this forum... but
I've a 2.2 petrol with irritating fault
It sometimes starts after a struggle when cold, then will not go over 1000RPM so the car is unmovable.
Occasionally running it ( very lumpy) like this for a few minutes breaks it out of this and the engine runs fine and will be fine for many days. starting with no problems at all.
So I ask the local garge to pick it up and of course it runs fine so there is nothing to fix! they recommend replacing the Throttle body as it might be that -  £370 + fitting for an experiment does not seem attractive when I suspect they haven't a clue.

Any ideas - a leaking injector was suggested somewhere else on the forum?

I would not have though it was the throttle body mate.

Being a 2.2 yours is Drive by wire i think i bet you could get a throttle body on ebay cheap and fitting it is an easy job.

have a look for AA's Throttle body cleaning.

had a very similar problem in my 2.2 16v Auto . local dealer did not change any enegine parts but simply upgraded ECU and car is much much better to start and run in clod days now.

(I'm still trying to figure out what exactly they changed in ECU since it had some drawbacks with more  fuel consumption and less accelaration) >:(.

not an expert , hope this helps!  better to check before ECU modification :-/

oh if it happens to be the throttle body and you need a new one

here is a cheapish one i think it should fit a 2.2

My 2.2 auto had a similar problem before I bought it....sometimes it wouldn't pick up from idle. The dealer I had it from replaced the throttle body with a used one and problem solved.  This didnt however affect the starting of the car or the idle. As suggsted a good clean out of the throttle body and breathers would be a good (and free!!) start.

Have you ever seen the engine management light on? (other than when you turn the key)?  could be  a problem with the crank sensor.

Could the HT leads be folding up?  1000rpm seems a bit low for the leads, bit of a long shot.

My car had running problems and I would find it very hard to accelerate, although it was driveable!  Mine is on 155k

How many miles has the car done?

does the spanner light ever come on after a lot of cranking? Could be a cam sensor problem, that causes starting issues...

I doubt very much that it will be the throttle body, dealers always replace things instead of putting things right.

A good clean of the throttle body and breathers is a good start, even for a beginner it's only a hours job.

The second place is as tunnie suggested, cam sensor, if it's going into 'limp mode', i.e. < 1000 revs, you can put your money on it.

Its a 2.2, doesnt have HT leads, uses a coil pack instead  :y

And I guess it could be this breaking down  :-/

If the coil pack was going it would miss fire, it should also rev higher than 1k (be a back of bolts but it should)

My money is on the cam sensor  :y

Agree throttle body and breathers wont do any harm  :y

Not so sure about cam sensor in this case.....'limp mode' will still let the engine rev to 4.5k....in N or P

Even in D and in limp mode.....flooring it and the revs will get to about 2k from standstill

Iirc AA, yours and my cam sensor prob only occured when the engine was hottish.....ie left for 10-20mins after normal temp. Always started fine when cold.
