Hiya, i hope im posting this is the right section! Im looking to do my first service on my newly acquired estate. Ive had a look through the technical guides and the oil & filter change info is a great help - thanks.

Im looking to change the diesel filter too and have heard it can be hard work, i couldnt see any info on it, so was wondering if anyone has had any experience changing it? Also when it comes to sourcing replacment parts (oil/air/diesel filters?) - is it worth going to vauxhall (are they better?) or can i just grab off the shelf at halfords?

I consider myself fairly practically minded but the reason im asking is because i changed the glow plugs last week and they were a bit of a pain in the backside!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Changing the fuel filter's easy enough, it just spins off. Before you change it though make sure that the in tank fuel pump works. Listen for it humming whilst the glow plug light's on. If you can't hear it you will have big problems getting the diesel bled.

If the pump's working it's easy. Change the filter then slacken the little bleed screw on the top of the filter housing, turn the ignition on to get the diesel pumping out of the blled screw. You may have to turn the ignition on more than once as the pump only runs for a few seconds each time. Tighten the bleed screw once there's fuel there and then start the engine and hold a few revs for a minute to make sure any air in the system doesn't let the engine stop.

I think you are ok with Halfords, but Vauxhall parts are not always the rip off you might expect, so worth checking with the dealer or Autovaux.

I just bought 5L Vauxhall long life antifreeze for about the same as the two year stuff in the factors.  Oil is supposed to be a good deal too especially if you can get it on trade.

Ill have a listen to my tank pump then and see if it is still alive. It sometimes seems as though it does have starvation problems when i first start in the mornings so it'll be worth the check. Thanks for your advice, ill be tackling it next week.

Just another quick question, if the fuel level drops below 20 litres in the tank, it really struggles to start and sometimes it won't start at all if its on a hill... Above 20 litres its always, well 9 times out of 10, spot on.

Anyone had similar problems or know a reason why? It seems that the fuel is draining back into the tank somehow but not really sure?

Sadly the starting trouble when the fuel level is below 20 litres will be that you fuel pump's not working  

When you do change the fuel filter, slacken the two filter housing bolts otherwise the filter won't slide all the way off as it hits against other things on it's way.

you need a 36mm socket to do tractor oil filter, as I found out today....

also, you need engine number for filter, as too different types. VIN won't be enough. Bloody BMW

Thanks for your help guys, ive just had a look at the plastic cover on the oil filter and it looks pretty knackered.

Its got a couple of lumps missing from it and where the socket is meant to go has all but disentegrated.

Ill have to call vauxhall tomorrow and find out the cost of a replacement i think!

Managed to get fuel, oil, air and cabin filters for £24 from halfords which seemd a pretty good price. Just got to get some oil and i should be set.

Hello again, have managed to complete most of the service now just waiting on the oil filter from vauxhall, and then its time to change the fuel filter.

After what you guys have said i am a little apprehensive about changing this for the fear that i shall never get the system bled again. Ive tried to listen to the pump but not knowing exactly where it is makes this somewhat difficult... :-/

Littlemike mentioned that my starting problems could be down to my fuel pump not working as well,
anyone know how i get to it to check? Is it likely to be just a fuse or a new pump job?

Any help getting over this final hurdle would be greatly appreciated cos this is my first diesel car and im learning alot along the way!!

My Astra 1.7 TD self bleeds - I even nicked a fuel filter chamber's worth the other day to clean my bike's back wheel of Scotoiler oil. It hick-upped a bit after it first ran.

Been away for a while trying to get my first service done..... aarrggh!!

Managed to change the oil (but not the filter, see below) and change the fuel filter and get the system bled eventually. Still got a couple of problems, so here goes:

Oil filter plastic cappy thing is dead (see pic) so new one ordered from Vx along with filter to fit that particular cap. Was told that the cap had to come from the factory but that there was no stock of the filter within 40 miles of coventry..hmm. This made me a bit suspicious because i thought they would be more available than that??

Here are the parts that i got my hands on £20 later:

So i come around to fitting all these shiny new bits to find this:



The first thing i noticed was that the plastic cap on the car was about 15mm larger in diameter than the new one i had. Sh1te. Plus the fact that the one on there is royally knackered and the chip missing out of it is causing oil to leak all down the side of the block and generally cause a mess.

I have been assuming that my engine is a Y25TD as that is what i was advised by Vx and hence these parts were ordered on that basis. Is this correct and how can i check??

If anyone can shed any light on this it would be greatly appreciated!!!

The other part of my nightmare is the fuelling system, after changing the fuel filter, i did as advised by TheBoy and opened the bleed screw and turned the ignition and nothing happened, no noises, no movement and certainly no diesel. When i removed the old diesel filter it was pretty much empty which i thought was strange, leading my suspicions towards the pump.

I looked in the boot and found the pump, and checked its power supply.. 12volts all ok. When i turn the ignition on with or without the bleed screw open there is no noise from the pump whatsoever. Its either an incredibly quiet pump or its f***ed. Anyone had any experince with these pumps or have one i can get my hands on??

Hi there,

I have a 2.5TD and although my engine number reported back by vauxhall as being the 'early' model it wasn't.  I took back the filter and rubber seals (half covered in oil as I'd already tried to fit the bloody thing) and they swapped it, and if I remember rightly handed me a few pennies back too.

The cap on mine has a longer pipe extending away from the cap.  See the pictures here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1164549800.  There's one of the complete assembly about 3/4 the way down the page.

My engine (as I understand) is the X25TD (and mine's a 98 - which I think is the year they changed over)

Just looking at the photo of the filter and cap - there doesn't seem to be enough rubber rings for the thing.  There should be three in the packet, bottom one (really small), second one up (smallish), and the big'un at the top around the threads of the cap.
The filter and cap don't seem to match - or perhaps they're hidden and I'm wrong.

Going to try and change the fuel filter soon myself, can't wait to get covered - no doubt from head to foot.

Thanks JesterRT, the cap which you have in your guide looks the same as the one currently on mine. And you say yours is an X25TD... perhaps this is where its all gone wrong. The filter i have fits into the cap i have fine but the filter shown in your pic is much larger and none of the part numbers match up either. Ill have to go back to Vx to see if they can show me any other bits which might do the job.

Just been back to Vx and it turns out that the guy i have been dealing with is a bit of a bell end.

After speaking to the parts manager for an hour we managed to establish that it was an X25DT not a Y25DT, so the filter and filter housing i had were both wrong... excellent.

I quoted the part number for the filter i thought it should be (93180093 - thanks to Marks DTM Calib & JesterRT) and we eventually found the right oil filter housing (90542605 - £26.03). Hurray!!

I should now be able to carry out my first filter change on the beast!!
