MV6 Running Rough On Cold Start Up
« on: 15 May 2007, 19:30:25 »

Hey all, I cleaned out the ICV (if thats what the thing that sticks out the side of the plenum chamber???) with some carb cleaner and squirted a little in to the pipes too.

I think some carb cleaner travelled down the pipe to back of the engine and got in where ever it connects to????

When I now start the car from cold, its idling around 400rpm and may need a little throttle to help get it started too. once the engine is warmed up it idles fine at around 600 rpm.

I dont know what to do next  :-[ :-[ so any help would be thankfully received ,

Have i done something spectacularly stoopid? should i punish myself by watchin the emmerdale farm omnibus on sunday?

yours hopefully

Jim

It could be that the ECU needs to learn the new position of the IACV during cold start now that it's clean. Maybe it'll settle down after a few more starts.

Does the idle speed change significantly if you switch on electrical load such as the heated rear screen, headlights, etc or the air con? Does it falter when you're approaching junctions when cold or when shifting into gear? If not, I'd suggest the IACV is working OK and it just needs to find the correct idle position.

If the revs are unstable under the above conditions it might be worth taking the IACV off and lubricating it with a little 3 in 1 oil or WD40 just in case it's sticking.

std v6 ones learn very quickly - a couple of secs at most.

OK. Not familiar with this setup. In that case I'd say it's either sticking or it didn't like the dose of carb cleaner. Has it run for a reasonable amount of time to dissipate the carb cleaner?

Was the idle speed control Ok before it was cleaned or was there a problem to prompt cleaning of the valve?

Had a tinker yeseterday after work and fired her up this mornrin and she runs perfect  :y. Just sprayed a little maintenance spray into the IACV.

She was running perfect before this, what started it was I were twidling thumbs on saturday so decided to have a tinker. Started of by polishing that bottle looking thing with a pipe in either end (something to do with aircon???) got that nice and shinney then decided to do the IACV, so I thought While its out i'll give it a clean out too.

Since cleaning it out Ive noticed today she seems a tad quicker, placebo effect lurks round the back of my mind but I reckon she is quicker.

Thanks guys for the replies,

Jim
