Exhaust Smells
« on: 17 May 2007, 23:18:47 »

Hi there, i have a strange problem that is becoming frustrating now when i have the vents open in any direction i.e widscreen floor etc i get an ongoing smell of exhaust fumes.  I have just had the manifold replaced as that was blowing and i thought would be the cause however the smell is still there.

Has anyone any suggestions what this could be, i have checked all over the exhaust and found no leaks, also appears to get worse when going backwards.

your help is appreciated.

Try the following....

With the engine running and the car secure (in Park if auto, and definitely with hand-brake on), put the palm of your hand over the exhaust and cover it. The engine should go down in RPM and stall. If the only small or no change in RPM, the exhaust is leaking.... you can compare the results to another car which has a known good exhaust.
