Does synth oil tend to leak out of old motors.
« on: 22 May 2007, 20:46:17 »

On my third tractor , they all drip on the gravel.
Last oil change semi synth it left a large stain overnight in my mates. Checked dipstick, just below min , topped it up with 1.5l duckhams mineral & it stayed full till next chnge now it's leaking again.

Generally, mineral oil is thicker, semi synth a little thinner, and fully synth thinner again. Obviously the thinner oils will find leaks.

I would locate and fix the leak, rather than putting in mineral oil.

It's a TD, but I can't see where it's coming from. ( Not Rocker covers).

Is there much point in using synth if you have to toss it out every 2&1/2 months. 5K Changes .

Personally, I use semi in mine.  Virtually all cars designed in last 15yrs have at least semi synth specified.

course there is, mine gets changed every 3000 miles on semisyth as it will protect the moving parts and turbo better than a mineral oil as it doesnt break down so quickly, the sheerslip(where the molecules start to elongate when used hard) is a lot higher on semi  and if i notice the difference in the smoothness of the engine after 3000 miles you must really notice it after five!!

semi everytime, as i work for an oil producer blending oils for different industries, you will get a better lubricity than mineral oil, it can take far more a battering, and as mentioned, it does not break down as easily.

Ok Ok I hear you. I'll look for the leak . Its not the sump bung. Nose of crank?
My last elite with drippy bung I replaced with "drain plug" but lost the whole lot on a bad yump.
AA paid for TDV6 Disco ., Nice Engine but not as good as a Migg. Shite seats , Worst stereo i'v ever stumbled across. Sump eventually repaired with isopon & jubilee clips.

hi mate, its only a suggestion if your losing oil like that i think i would check the breather system as it seems like its building up pressure possibly in the sump then pushing it out of the seals/gskets,also as a quick check start the engine and remove the dipstick see if you feel pressure or any heavy signs of fumes or smoke emitting from dipstick tube,if it does you no then you have crank case compression building up in sump, and the oil viscosity wont make any differance then, hope it helps you out & good luck, curly

Don't believe the TD's have any cleanable breathers?

Only one I've found is the one from rocker to intake.  Mine was clear....

Mine's on Fully Synthetic, does not leak & gets changed every 10K
Has done 128K now & the only problem in 4 years of ownership was the overheating which now appears to have been remedied
