Self levelling rear shocks
« on: 25 May 2007, 20:21:31 »

Hi, after loads of problems with rear shocks on my 03 plate 2.2DTI Elite. I want to know if it is possible to fit standard shocks and if there are any problems regarding headlamps as there is no switch on the dash for this function as there was on my old car.
Thanks
Steve

I don't have an answer for you, sure someone will be along soon to help, but to be going on with type Rear Shocks in the rectangle with a magnifying glass next to it (top right of screen), there quite a few posts are there maybe worth a look :y

Don't know about the shocks, but if you are asking about the headlight level switch, then the answer is that Xenon HID headlights are all self levelling, so yours being an Elite will have the HIDs with the self levelling mechanism. It works off a sensor in the front nearside suspension, so should not be dependant on the self-levelling feature of the rear shocks.

So in short I don't know is normal shocks will fit (I suspect they might though...), but if you do manage to get them in then they should not affect the headlamps levelling.

But why do you not want to replace the self-levelling with standard shocks anyway?

Hi and welcome. You're in the same scenario as me, I have self-levelling rear dampers and HIDs. I can state that you can fit standard shocks no problem, just remove the fuse for the self-levelling pump. That's what I'll be doing soon as my self-levellers are goosed.

The levelling system for the HIDs is independent of the shocks. There is a sensor on the front and rear axles to determine the required angle of the lights, motors inside each light adjust the vertical beam height automatically.

Just noticed my second paragraph pretty much repeated what markjay said.

Personally the reason I intend to replace self-levellers with standard shocks is primarily price, but also because there's a far better selection available with non-levelling shocks so you can choose the type that suits your driving style. Also I think it's a bit pointless on a saloon, I never carry anything particularly heavy anyway.
