Clutch vs Engine
« on: 30 May 2007, 16:33:12 »

Why can't I select reverse when my engine is on? >:(

First gear is also stiff and the others are not very friendly either :(

When I turn the engine off - all is well :o

All I've done today is flush the coolant  -  advise please  :-[

Sometimes on mine it wont go into 1st or reverse from a cold start.  Just lift the clutch and depress again, then it will slip in nicely (as the actress said to the....... :-X ).   :y

my box is not great either... first can be very stiff in the morning, can take a couple of depresses to get it in. Reverse can stick too...

I think I need an auto next  ::)

The other possibility is that the clutch is dragging a little, meaning that with the car at rest the gearbox input shaft is still spinning, making gear selection difficult.

Once you're on the move, both sides of the gearbox are spinning anyway, so the relative speed is small and it will change gear no problems, but when you're stopped it's critical that the clutch disengages completely.

If you put it in 1st, clutch down, start engine and wait for a while, does it start to creep forwards? does it do this immediately or after a while? Is it easier to initially select a gear if you "pump" the clutch pedal a few times before attempting?

Does the clutch engage smoothly as you pull away or does it tend to judder?

Could either be a problem with the clutch hydraulic circuit or maybe contamination of the clutch itself.

If first is tight, pull it back onto second (without engaging) then push it forward into first quickly.

You can achieve a similar thing when engaging revers as well.

No creeping at all.  No benefit to pumping the pedal.  It helps if I select 3rd first then select 1st gear.  Clutch engages ok when I pull away apart from an initial lag, which I've always put down to intertia.

Should I bring some clutch fluid and let you all have a play at Keswick?

All omega manual gearboxes (or quite a few anywway) seem to have this problem. I tried doing a fluid change as recommended by MarksDTM, improved for a while, then back to normal. I just live with it.

:(Have the same fault on my manual box,my mate who is a vx teccie has told me that if a customer complains of stiff gear selection, they all go to the selection gate under the gear lever gaiter and apply a special type of grease to the gear stick and nylon guides.it helps in 90% of cases.

I think mines a bit more than that. When I sit in the queue at macdonalds, ie, close to a wall, I put it in and out (oo missus) of gear and it is very 'clonky' sounding.

Sounds like the hydraulic system is OK so that's one thing to cross off the list, and by the sound of it this isn't an unknown problem. Keswick might be an opportunity to compare cars I guess. I won't be any use, I'm afraid, because mine's got a girly slushbox >:(
