v6 ignition lead replacement HOW?
« on: 02 June 2007, 23:50:13 »

Hi there,
Can anyone give me any tips on replacing the ignition leads on my 2.5 v6 omega
I have removed the wiper motor etc, but still cannot gain acces to the dis module.
Would be very grateful if anyone can help.
                                                           Regards silvergold.

Have you removed the scuttle? Access to the DIS is blind at the best of times, when replacing a DIS I actually sat on a piece of wood going across the engine, and reached behind the block to the DIS.

When replacing the leads, replace one at a time, so you don't get them mixed up  :y

Why are you replacing the leads out of interest? You getting a mis-fire?

this may not be the quickest way, but it certainly was the easiest......

remove the scuttle, wipers and the plenuim.

then deal with one bank at a time, i prefer to start on the passenger bank, it is the hardest.

the dispack i do by hand, i remove and replace one lead at a time it stops me from messing up

Good luck

Missing under load is most certainly a HT issue

Step one is to check all the leads and if needs-be replace them

On my old 2.5 I found a big split in one, and got away with just replacing that one lead. Much easier on the wallet (and the skin on the knuckles!) :y

If you kneel on the plenum / battery you can get much better access. Careful you don'r crack the plastic Ecotec bit though.

If you take the plenum off access is a lot better - and probably easier overall.

im just gearing up to finish this job today...one final bolt and my dis is out ( started late and ran into beer time yesterday)

can i be controversial...?

No plunum off
no wiper motor out
skuttle panel off

Two wheels ( any wheels) from another car on top of each other at the front of your car, stand on them to have an elevated position and then lye over the top of engine ( carefully)

That had me looking straight down the back of the engine.
Unclip anything at the back right of engine - connector wise -  and you will get access to all 6 plugs... :y

If you are removing the scuttle, you may find that you are unable to remove the wiper arms from the spindle.  If this is the case, you will need one of these:

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cht427-windscreen-wiper-arm-remover

I would try and remove the arms before you plan to do the job to see if you need the tool or not.  If you do, allow a few days for delivery!

Hope this helps

i had to replace two of my passenger leads on my 2.5 as they were corroded to the sparks and left the insides behind! long nose pliers got those bits out before i could get the spark plug spanner in! so i thought might as well do all six.....

my tips are,

- use 3/8" sockets as they are narrower and fit in gaps more easily.
- haynes was actually very helpful with this operation!
- the DIS is higher than i thought on the passenger side. but i believe different models might have put it in a different place. just follow the ht leads! i was warned it would be necessary to get at from underneath, thankfully on my '96 cdx i didnt have to!

- taking the wipers off wasn't too bad and a must to get to the DIS. not necessary to get to the sparks only tho'. ps the firing order on the dis isn't logical,  but well documented!
- i didnt use a tool to get the wipers off, just wiggled a lot!
- really make sure the plug wells aren't full of water like mine were!
- i got a set of leads 6 for £40 trade in birmingham. not performance types but do the job and a lot better on the wallet!
- it is true that the rear passenger plug is tricky to get at but very satisfying once done!
- wear two sets of rubber gloves to protect against cack and scrapes!

it's a great time to grease the wiper mechs, replace pollen filters, and clean the bottom of the windscreen :)

Vectra Elite Estate doing good post-Omega service but still not as nice to sit in.

One last Omega on the drive, one Corsa on the lawn...maybe they'll go to a good home before too long!

You usually find that the plug that hasn't been replaced is the rear passenger side one, a bit of a pig to get to, so some people leave it alone  ;)
