I have a very strange problem with my 2.0 16v Omega with the siemens  managment system. The engine type is X20Xev. The car has covered 102,000 miles and been in my hands since it was almost new.

When first started everything is fine and the engine management light goes out straight away. Within a few miles, (depending on the air temperature) the car makes to stall but corrects itself, the management light comes on and the car continues running as if nothing has happened.

A check on the error codes reveals four showing.

1. Faulty camshaft sensor
2. Faulty crankshaft sensor
3. Fault with ignition module covering cylinders one and three
4. Fault with ignition module covering cylinders two and four.

The car is well maintained and has recently had new plugs and airfilter etc, the breathers are clear and the idle control valve has been cleaned (although I do wonder after this mileage is may be just worn).

A new camshaft sensor was fitted about two years ago and I am disinclined to believe the coils are faulty because starting is instant and there is no trace of a misfire. This leaves just the crankshaft sensor. I did buy a new one but it looks a right sod to fit, tucked as it is at the back of the timing chest and hidden by the power steering pump and the compressor for the ac.

If any kind soul has any idea as to the fault I would be most grateful. Also any shortcuts to replacing the crankshaft sensor would be most welcome!

when i changed the crank sensor on my 2l i jacked the front up took the four bolts out of the sump protector and then removed the locking ring of the sensor that way only took me 20mins straight forwad enough m8 :y

I tried to replace the Cranksensor on my 2.0 last weekend, I spent housr on it from above and from below. It did not matter which way I did, I found the air con compressor was just in the way and eventually gave up on it. Think the only way is to move the compressor slightly over to allow access with a socket. Not easy to get too and impossible to see!!

crank sensor is fiddly if it is a/c equipped.

How did you read the codes, was it paperclip method, or a code reader? If the later, clear all the codes, and see what comes back, as the real fault may be unrelated to these codes, eg ICV
