« on: 10 June 2007, 13:24:23 »

I don't know if this is normal but my headlamp glasses appear to be PLASTIC >:( when I bought the car I did notice they were a bit opaque & scratched.
Oh & I know this sounds daft but does my car have a immobilser fitted, how do you tell? any info from my fellow oofers would be appreciated ;)

plastic headlamp lenses are normal ... less likely to get smashed by stones! Seem to remember someone recommending the use of brasso to clean them ...

AFAIK all omegas have immobilisers - if you pull the blade off the rest of the key there is a small transponder chip in the bottom of the blade section.

I don't think GLS spec models have an alarm as standard, though.

TCut works a treat on the pre minifacelift lenses (pre 98 I think) that go 'yellow'.

Yes, like most modern cars, plastic.

What year is your car?

Talking of headlights can you take the lenses off of the face lift omegas? Ive had a quick look and there seems to be a number off plastic clips!

The reason I ask is Ive seen a couple off cars with the insides (chrome bit) sprayed mat black. it looks  good, but is it legal?

You have a decent immobiliser on that, Thatcham approved (can't remember if cat1 or 2). Chip in key is read by reader in ignition, and if the immobiliser ecu is happy this is an authorised key, it sends a unique code to engine ECU saying it has authority to start.

My headlamps were really bad, yellow, scratched and had had stickers on at some point. I used 1200 grit wet and dry a new sheet) then 1200 grit again but well used. Then Halfords rubbing compound then T cut then polish. The headlamps are now crystal clear. I also bought 50% brighter bulbs.
For the first time since Ive had the car I can see where Im going!!!!

Seen the clips on mine but I dont think the lenses come off, as for spraying the chrome backs black, this would make you beam less efficient as the chrome is not for cosmetic reasons, it acts as a reflector, dont know if its illegal but most likely be an mot failure.

no doubt someone on the forum will know for deff.

easiest way to tell projector and reflector - if you can see the bulb in the middle ie, both halves of the light - main and dipped beam) look identical then it's a reflector. If you see what looks like a big glass golfball in the dipped beam section, then you have projector (or HID) headlights ...

The lenses DO come off ... but they are bonded on with a black mastic type sealant, so it takes a bit of heat and a lot of patience and persistence to ge them off !!
