2.5td auto box - Help urgently needed!!
« on: 16 June 2007, 11:46:22 »

I own a 2.5 td. the one with the bmw engine.  my auto box is playing up.  she maintains engine speed but does not go anywhere fast.    had vauxhall plug in to the ecu this morning and the fault relates to the solenoid on 2nd and 3rd not functioning properly!  can anyone help.  someone suggested getting a 3 litre auto box and replacing with my one or would it be cheaper to replace  the solenoid on my box ?  any help would be greatly appreciated.   oil and filter were changed on box at christmas  tks

tbh, the AR25 fitted to TD is not really up for the job. Consider replacing with an AR35 from a knackered 3.0l.

Without the exact codes, hard to say what fault is, but just because the reader said solenoids, doesn't necessarily mean that is the case.

Apparently, the solenoids are easy to get at with sump off if you do decide to replace these.

Hope that helps a little,
Fellow tractor owner with a fubar'd AR25 autobox....

Hi Rogerreno, Please take what I say with a pinch of salt as I am NO expert.

I have recently had a similar fault in my Omega 3ltr Elite. As I would accelerate the car would stuter and go into limp home mode i,e it would stay in third with no power at all. If I stopped turned of and restarted the engine the auto gearbox warning would reset until I pulled of again.

The error code was the same as yours & pointed to the solonoid, However this was changed & the problem stayed. eventually it was traced to a pump! Unfortunatly I don't remember the name exactly but if you face the engine it is on the right hand side, low done on the front of the engine with a belt going around it.

Again I'm sorry if thats a little vague but as I said I am no expert but it may ring some bells with your garage/mechanic.

Good luck, Darren :y

Thanks for your advise everyone - I guess that the cheaper option is to get the AR35 box and make the change??

So does anyone know where I can get a trustworth AR35 from, and would anyone be interested in helping me make the swap, as Im no mechanic :-[

Thanks again.... Phil

Fancy some added stress LOL - No seriously if you think you can help me in the coming week, I'd be very very greatful..  I only bought the car last week, and me, my missus and broken cars have a bad track record - she has been laying into me big time - right now I've got puppy eyes and my tail is tucked neatly between my legs  :(

Alas, I'm not the g/box changing expert, hence why I have people coming to assist!

AR35's I can get by the bucketful with a week or two's notice. I have a very trustworthy supplier and ALL boxes are from cars driven by him personally. I have had several now and they have all been top.

Changing the AR25 on a TD to an AR35 is not a nightmare, but is not for the feint hearted. In a nutshell, you have to swap the bellhousing over and the gearbox support. The support is easy enough, but swapping the bellhousing needs some care as you are opening the box up and this is where REAL problems can start. You have to split the seal between the front clutch housing and the bellhousing. If you get it wrong the clutch plates can dislodege and it can get very ugly then. I have built many autoboxes, so this is my department.

I am not doing TheBoy;s box tomorrow as I have other commitments, but I will be available on the phone if you get stuck jaime. Your box and James's are in the back of laidbacks car.
