Auxiliary Fan Question
« on: 06 June 2007, 15:28:22 »

I have a 3 litre V6 model which has just had the air conditioning re-gassed everything fine however it appears that one of the two auxiliary electric fans (front nearside) in front of the A/C radiator is not coming on. Are both the fans meant to come on simultaneously as only one appears to be working? All fuses appear to be OK.  The fan on the right side comes on immediately but nothing from the left one.  What’s the best way to isolate the problem to the fan or its controller? I assume they are both meant to come on together.
I should be grateful for anyone with experience of this.

They should both run at half speed initially (until system pressure / temperature reaches a certain limit).

This is achieved by the motors running in series for low speed and in parallel for high speed. It could be that the one that's not running has siezed. Can it be turned by hand? Will it start running if you give it a "nudge"?

Could be worth taking it off and seeing if the motor can be freed up and lubricated, but it's probably best to just replace with a 2nd hand one from a breakers.

Thanks for the quick reply. The fan thats not running is not seized and spins quite easily by hand. Do both the fans use the same temp controller?

Yes but all this amounts to is a few relays in the engine bay fuse box. It might be worth checking in there for any blown fuses. It could be a relay, I guess. I'd be inclined to take the fan off and test it by connecting the motor to the output of a car battery charger before delving too deeply though.

Just trying to work out how it comes out, I take it its just two screws and the connector having removed the grill and plastic top cover. All the fuses appear OK. Just wondering if its possible to swap relays over if there are two.

I'll have to look at the wiring diagram. If you've got to the connector why not connect it up in-situ first? it may be that the fan doesn't have to come out if it's OK.

The fan appears fine and free spinning just wont power up. Just trying to find where it connects to as its a bit cramped. Just cleared out a whole load of leaves and debris. Thanks for your help by the way much appreciated. The other fan seems to come straight in at full pelt.

If you disconnect the faulty fan does the other one still run full pelt, or does it not run at all?

Hi Mark
I have the opposite problem that a fan wont turn off and flattens the battery. The fans have individual fuses located in the triangular box by the battery. They are green 30amp fuses and I thing the nearside fan will be the right hand fuse as you look from the front of the car. I would check those first much easier to get at :y

I have checked the Fuses and they are OK, I intended to try swapping the two orange fan relays over to see if the problem switches over to the other fan not working but I'm having difficulty pulling them out, boy are they tight. Even the simple things on these cars end up being a pain  >:(

I found it easier to unclip the relay and its holder then you can get a better grip of the relay  :y

Just an update on the fan problem which has now finally been sorted out. New Auxiliary fan fitted, bought new for an eye watering £125. Local breakers wanted £35 but thought to hell with the expense and bought new. Rather relieved that it was simply a straight swap out as the circuit looks horribly complicated, two temp sensors a pressure switch and what looks like 4 relays. Old fan was not seized just dead but loads of leaves and other debris sucked onto the bottom of the a/c condenser and cleared out when fan removed.

Sorted then! :y
:o I think I'd have been prepared to buy 3 second hand fans rather than buy a new one at that price!

The dealers have just given me a price for a new MAF for my diseasal Astra. They had one on the shelf - £92 + Vat ..... I declined!  ;)
