Strange starting problem
« on: 05 July 2007, 19:40:46 »

Got a strange problem on starting.  When I turn ignition key, hear a click, engine wont turn over, turn again same, turn 3rd time car fires.  Switch off and turn key, car starts, take key out and try again two clicks, fires on third time.

Battery shows 12.97 volts
SWMBO says yesterday it was firing at second attempt

only work done on car in last week, changed HBV

Anyone got any ideas as to what might be going on?

Turn as much electrical load on as you can (headlights, heated seats  etc) and measure the battery voltage again.....

Also, check the battery terminals are tight and the 0V connections are all good.

Have you tried the spare key in case it's an issue with the fob.

Forgive me for appearing thick, all electrics on with engine on or off, what sort of voltage should I be looking for.  and what are 0V connections.

Your battery connections tight - maybe an idea to check for good clean connections.  With all electrics on I think a voltage below 13V is looking like a battery problem, or possible alternator.

I think M_DTM was hinting at turn electric items on with engine off and measuring again, to see how battery acts under load....

Battery connections clean and tight, at idle with all goodies on, seats headlights etc voltage around 13.5, and yes it did fire first time.  Maybe it got scared when i said i was going to consult the big boys
;D will have to keep an eye on this one.

of course it could just be water problems, given that parts of Doncaster are still under water and it hasn't stopped raining for what seems like months !!

Which 'Goodies' were on - that seems a little low to me...

Still having an intermitent problem, every so often turn ignition and ....click, turn it again and it fires.  Battery indicator is showing good charge.

anyone any good ideas, could it be the starter motor, is there a test for it??

Battery indicator only shows the condition and level of the acid ...could have an intermittent shorted or high resistance cell.....

Does sound like a faulty battery
