Battery

Could someone advise please.

1) Miggy has been stood for a week
2) Went out today to start her
3) Turned ignition key, rev counter and speedo needles started jumping all over the     place, car would not start, not even a click.
4) Started Miggy using jump leads from daughters car.
5) Miggy started, let them both tick over for a while then disconnected jump leads.
6) Took miggy for a 10 mile ride with Mrs Miggy, got back on drive, turned her off then back on again no problem.
7) Left her for 20 mins then went back, she would not start, battery flat as a pancake.
8) jump leaded her again, she started.
9) Turned her off, will not start after 20 mins again.

Whilst she was ticking over I put a meter onto the battery, turned the lights on, the meter dipped for split seconds then back up to normal, I take it this tells me the alternator is ok.

Could it be that the battery is not holding a charge.
Pete

Quite likely I would have thought.
I've just done the same thing with my bike in the garage. I haven't used it in a fortnight or so & just I noticed that I'd left the ignition on! :( Switching the ignition back on, after I'd connected the battery charger, the tacho did the same thing as yours. I just hope I haven't killed my battery - the bike was built around the bugger! :(

Cheers Andy, I hope so as I got a battery earlier from Vx.

Make sure your alternator is kicking out about 13.8-14.4v, also whilst still checking the volts rev the engine above 2500 rpm and make sure the volts do not go above 14.4 v.

Thanks Dazzler, all checks out fine, I cannot understand why the green indicator on the battery is still showing green.

Yes that's a bit steep.  I just bought a Bosch with 4years warranty for £37 from Costco.  I did have a look in Hafrauds first but was very shocked at the prices! >:(

...could have got a lot of 1.5v dry cells for that money. Perhaps changed the car into a milk float. ;D ;D

Was told many moons ago by a garage that even with nothing on in a car stood for a long period the battery will eventually discharge through the diodes in the alternator. Do not think this is valid for the Omega, but certainly do disconnect battery from my classics, especially if i know they will not be used for a long time. Works for me. :y
