Missfiring V6 - how much should I pay?

Hi All

W reg 3.0 MV6 has now started missfiring - the smell of oil tells me it's the rockercovers to be replaced and other bits cleaned out.

As you can see, I'm not the most technically minded Omega owner here.  Whilst I've found a couple of DIY guides on the site I don't feel I'm up to it.

The local Independent Vauxhall place quoted me £400ish for fitting new rocker covers and supplying new HT leads as well.  Is this about right?  If it is, should a guy who just about recognises one end of a spanner from another have an attempt at doing it?!!

If he is going to use genuine Vx parts, and you MUST insist on this, that's a good price. However, I dont see how he can be quoting for genuine plug leads, as they cost a fortune.

As has been stated, genuine gaskets are the way to go.

Believe it or not, it isn't as hard as it looks. Just be methodical - you can do it :).  A second set of hands is useful for the passenger side bank.

If you do it yourself, you know its done correctly!

Misfiring will cause unburnt fuel to get in the cats,  they get hot, they'll ignite and smash up the honeycomb, cause a blockage etc....  Get it sorted!

Sorry to hear about your issues mate!

But for what its worth, a month ago when I joined the site I was, and am still pretty much a donkey when It comes to the spanners! Had spent the last 20 years running my cars into my local garage at the slightest blip in performance. When I came here I was paping me pants about doing anything under the bonnet, it all meant nothing to me!
I eventualy plucked up the balls to have a go at a small job uner the bonnet, cleaning out the breathers, which I was terrfied to do as I just didnt have a clue!
After reading the maintenance guides, and me posting an onslaught of donkey questions, i started to get there!

Last week I did the rocker covers on my V6, again asking a lot of daft questions. I tend to take a digi pic, post it, and ask 'Whats this bit do then?"

I guess Im saying, dont be afraid to ask donkey questions if you are lost on what to do, there very patient here, and god knows they need to be with me! ;D

£400 for rocker gaskets? A month ago I would have paid someone to do it! I did it myself last week in a morning mate, and it cost me £45 and a pot of sealent! And I was in the same possition as you are now! Clueless!

Dont be afraid to use the forum for it main purpose mate! To help:y

Thanks everyone for the comments.  I'm gonna have a crack at it over the weekend under the watchful eye of a semi-petrolheaded neighbour - I'll no doubt be online everytime I get stuck so I'll apologise in advance for the forthcoming "donkey questions"  ;D

Note the £400 was for cam covers (not just seals) and new leads.  

The covers most likely can be reused (unless warped), so it is just the seals (GM), o-rings, and black sealant needed.  Possibly HT leads, but not GM as they are a ridiculous price.   I would also change the plugs at the same time as the dismantling needed is largely the same and the most significant part of the job.  Also read up on cleaning the breathers (on here) as this is most likely what caused the seals to go in the first place.
