Engine cutting out!
« on: 18 July 2007, 13:49:34 »

Hello, can anybody help? bought an r-reg omega ran fine 4 a while but now it's over revving and when im braking the engine cuts out(which aint much fun on a corner coz the steering locks). A friend suggested changing the airflow meter but another friend said he had a similar prob and he cleaned the airflow meter with carb cleaner and that done the trick. Not very knowledgeable about cars so please simplify ur response, not gonna attempt to do anything myself but would like to know wot im in for price wise!
Thanks in advance!

Can you tell us the engine size and number of valves if a 4 cylinder.

It sounds like a sticking idle vale so I am guessing its a 4 cylidner 2.0 16V......

dunno about the cylinder bit but its a 2.0 Gls 16v. So does that have anything to do with the air flow meter then?

More likely Idle Control Valve (ICV) than air flow meter. I would start by cleaning then lubricating the ICV and take it from there. It'll cost you nothing except a can of carb cleaner.

NO....carb cleaner can bugger MAF's up....

It will be an air leak which will be throwing a MAF fault (MAF low I suspect).....check inlet trunking for splits etc and make sure all the breather pipes are good and in place.

I see so many MAF's miss diagnosed as faulty due to poor fault finding!

You should consider celaning out the breather pipes, throttle body and idel valve to.

Hi Vikkie.
Have a read of what I put on this thread.

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1184578248

Then, for a quick check, get hubby to disconnect the smaller breather pipe
from the Cambox cover and try blowing down it.
This will give you a good idea if it's blocked.
Depending on result, post up your findings and we'll take it from there.

I have a 2.0 GLS facelift Vikki and I had the very same problem, it was cured by having the ICV, throttle body and breathers cleaned out, as mentioned by Marks DTM, so you might wanna try that first

As said above vikki, try that out first and it should cure the problem. I had same problem with my last four omegas and they all done the same thing as you have described. Changed the idle control valve and cleaned relevant pipes and cured it. Fingers crossed still have no problems to date.

I think all 2.0 DOHC's have this problem - mine certainly has.

Grumpy's post above is really excellent :y - should go in the maint guide section IMHO.

The key is not just clean the ICV , but also the breather pipes and throttle body.  Especially the thin breather pipe and its port into the intake below the throttle body.

Think we need some pics of this.   Its a pretty straightforward job but needs doing thoroughly.
