It's raining inside!
« on: 20 July 2007, 09:24:27 »

For some time I've thought there was a bit of a damp, musty smell after rain...
This morning, there is a medium-sized puddle in the rear foot well!   :(

So where's that come from??  :-?

Thanks for the pointers guys.

But I'm not going out in this to check - it'll have to wait until the sun comes out!  I guess I might need a bucket to start bailing by then...  :(

I've got this problem too - I should have checked it out with you guys first I suppose!
Over the last few months (during this crap weather) I've had at times over two inches of water stood in the rear footwell.
When I've set off after a heavy downpour the rainwater floods through from behind the glovebox and into the passenger footwell - eventually making it's way into the rear. There is never any damp inside the glovebox however.
Last week I had Autoglass fit a new screen (thinking that the old one was fitted quite poorly) and I also fitted a new pollen filter just to be sure.
Well, the rain really came down this morning here in Somerset - the first time it's been so heavy in a couple of weeks - set off to take the kids to school this morning and what do you know - water piling in from behind the glovebox - back to the drawingboard and back to bailing out.
I will certainly take the advice above and let you know if I've had any success.

All the best,

Steve

As its coming in from behind glovebox, its your scuttle drain - the well below pollen filter will fill up if the drain is blocked, water comes in via pollen filter, and ends up in cabin (and ruins pollen filter, and climate fan controller if climate fitted).

Clear the drain, all will be dry then ;)

And it takes only a small slope for the water to appear in the rear passenger foot well.

My scuttle is clear, but it rained so hard here today that the drain could not cope with the volume of water, so now i have a rather soggy passenger footwell  >:(

Hmmmm, I would say your drain is not clear enough then...    ...both my Omegas have been in torrential rain all day, and I bet I have not suffered wet carpets (too wet to run the 5 yrds to car to check!

Hi all,
I've been into the scuttle drain - it's full of water - but I could not reach the bottom!! (arm too thick).
Sent my 14 year old son in and he can't reach the crap in the bottom.
What would you suggest is the best way to drain the scuttle off and clean the junk out?

All the best

A gentle prod with a cane.  Dont use anything too sharp or strong, and be careful of the wiring loom that goes through at the bottom.

Hi THE BOY

I have tried a barbeque basting brush and a kebab stick - to no avail. I dropped my hand in and could feel the wiring loom and passed the prodders into my hand - water level as dropped but it's still not clear - water is filthy so I guess there is lots of gunk. Is the drain  immediately beneath the wiring loom, I can't get my fingers that far down to feel around so I have just been try to dislodge it.

Thanks

Steve

Yes, just below loom.

On 1998 and earlier, there is a rubber tube which exits in passenger wheelarch - may help to attack it that way.  Post 98 cars, if drains straight down, these seem to be less prone to blockage.

Thanks for all the help and advise. Set my wife on it - she managed to release the water and the drain plug was half in/out so she pushed it into the drain gulley in the engine and managed to retreive it, it was stuffed with crap!! I have washed it out and will atempt to refit it tomorrow ::) hopefully I can get it back in from the top. There is alot of insulation tape missing from the loom (appx 3 inch) I think that I will leave it a week or so to dry then attempt to put some tape around it to protect it again - such a small space to work in though.

Once again thanks
