2.2 Error code P0420
« on: 23 July 2007, 22:03:43 »

A Friends 2001 2.2 Meega keeps showing the Check Engine Light

He keeps getting it reset at his friendly garage who say its an old code, gremlin in the ecu etc etc etc

It came on again on the way to mine today, I cheapo tech2'd it, and got P0420, reset it, gone again for the moment.

I Dont know what the previous codes were, would guess the same.

Anyone know what that code is?

Cheers

Interesting, and resolution?

New sensors?
Clean em?
Few doses of optimax?
Forte Additive?

Thinking about it, are these the sensors the supermarket fuel fiasco knackered a while back?

Wonder if he has been on the cheap fuel?

Could be a knackered cat as well.

I think it is saying its monitoring o2 before and after cat, and the results back indicate that the cat isn't working well enough.  Now this could be duff sensor readings, due to sensors, wiring etc, or a real cat fault.  If it is a failed cat, there may be another root cause - if he continued driving with a flashing emissions light, that will damage cat.

Ouch, could be expensive!
light was on, not flashing. (according to the book, that is not as 'nasty')
Think I'll ask the fuel question to start with, and suggest some cleaner as a 'may help'
Cheers
