2.5 v6 won't idle
« on: 23 July 2007, 10:29:05 »

Hi all,
the Mrs (bless her) managed to drive the meega into the largest puddle she could find on friday- can coughed a bit but didn't die.
This morning, car wont start.
sprayed everything with WD40, now car will start with a touch of throttle (about 700rpm) but loose the throttle and it dies.
Only thing I can find is soaked air filter (still does the same wheather air filter is in or not)
No engine warning lights, nowt.

HELP!!!!

PS if she break the "£*!!! thing agin i'm divorceing her!

First of all you need to check to see if any water got through the air filter into the engine. Was the air filter wet or dry when you took it out?

Next how deep was the puddle, did the water go over the engine and swamp the plugs/leads. You may find that the plugs are still under water if water got in. So dry out using some kitchen paper towel down each of the plug holes. Take off the connectors to the dis pack and check they are dry. Also check and dry the connector to the air intake.

Let us know how you get on.

Try taking the various connectors off the dis and air flow meter, dry them out and then, after putting them back on, try to start the motor. Are there any light coming on when you try to start the car?

Could be a little water got by the filter. If it has then again try starting without the filter in. When you said that the motor was running with a little throttle, was it smooth or lumpy?

runs fine- not lumpy at all both with filter in and out. just dies at about 700 rpm (not ideal when tickover is 500)

O.K. is it possible for you to run the car for a time until it gets up to normal temperature?

I am saying this as I think you may still have some areas that have not dried out yet and the heat will help. :)

Funnier things have happened, going by the fact it runs, not at the correct speed at the moment, I would hazard at a guess that it is not all that broke. But that is only my opinion while sitting in sun shine in Scotland. Without seeing it for myself that is what I would think. Take the air filter out for the time being though. Try to dry the thing out or better still get another one.

Keeping every thing crossed. :y

ok, update,
ran it for about 20 mins on the drive, running ok, just won't tickover- first 5 mins big clouds of steam from engine bay.
runnig fine- no misfires, nowt.
just wont idle.
will tick over at 500 rpm with a tough of gas.
Is there somewhere that controls the idle speed? (like the idle screw on a carb, (only more expensive, knowing my luck!!!))
how easy is it to adjust/fix/replace?

Try unplugging the cables going to the throttle position sensor...situated on r/h side front of throttle body..is a small black unit with rubber plug connecting it..worth checking wires and ensuring no moisture inside plug..also have a look at the plug connecter on the back of the idle control valve..silver cylinder unit behind that connecter same side of engine....would be worth removing entire body and giving a good clean out with carb cleaner as may have picked up some muck and causing valve inside to stick..best of luck with it...by the way engine idle speed has to be adjusted electronically so no screw like old carb !!bet it is dirt some where causing something to stick...assuming it ran and idled ok before the water issues

Yep, take the idle valve off and clean well with carb cleaner....then clean it again......then add a little light oil....
