broken spring

someone once mentioned that my suspension had a broken spring.does that meen that i could actually see a spring that has a snapped coil

yep - usually the last few inches that snap off.  

Pretty obvious to spot, easier on the rear than the front.  Jack the car up, wheel off, get a torch and follow the spring coils.

If you have a broken spring, replace as a pair.  Use aftermarket instead of VX on cost ground (I used KYB).  Front or back are doable as long as you do not mind getting your hands dirty.  If you are going the front you will need spring compressors and need to be careful to reset the strut to get the camber right

Likely to be a rear - look for bottom turn missing. Replace in pairs!!

Agree, only replace in pairs.  However being the tight git that I am I only replaced one and can't tell the difference

It may catch you out later. I was unaware I'd broken a spring, until Mr DTM pointed it out. The handling seemed fine though. Until I put it in a fast, long sweeper at speed, and it became unstable in the bend.

The new and the old springs will be different strengths, leading to unpredictable handling - and I say anything unpredictable can be classed as dangerous...
