Why did my car die on me ???????
« on: 28 July 2007, 21:27:46 »

Hello Guys
Hope you can give me some help  :'(

I was driving home from work today, cruising at 40mph, when the revs died and all the dash lights came on and I had to pull over to the side with no power steering  :o

I tried turning it over, it cranked over but did not fire.
AA called out  :y the guy checked the spark plugs ( 2 months old)
                                                       coil pack  (working)
                                                       battery (fine)
                                                       Fuses   (fine)
Over a quarter of a tank of Shells V power  :y
He then decided to check the fuel pump which appeared to be working,
And decided it must be fuel related  :-/
Sooooooooooo  it appears to be some fault between the fuel pump and the engine  :-/

So car taken to Vauxhall in Crawley, and dropped in for Monday, at least I can point them in the right direction, save some money on investigation  :o

ANY ideas ????

Car is an X reg 2.2 petrol Omega

No EML (I'm assuming thats a warning light on my dash?)
The AA guy had a laptop to read fault codes and there was not one  :o

Well I visited the Vauxhall garage yesterday evening and they told me my CAMBELT had snapped  :o

My cars done 75,000 miles, so I wasn't planning on changing it for another 5000 miles,

They are going to strip my car today, then phone me with any news, and check to see if there is any valve damage, if there is not, aparently they still send off the cylinder head to be pressure tested  :-?
Can anyone tell me if this is true ? its going to cost an extra £50 but the service desk said they won't put my car back together again without it !!!

If theres no damage they will obviously put it all back together again with new cambelt and tensioner, however whats the chances of there not being any further damage ?

I was travelling at about 30mph when it died and I just pulled over to the side of the road.

ANY OPINIONS WELCOME  ;D

Pretty certain the 2.2 is not a 'safe' engine, hence the cranking to attempt to start will have caused valve damage.

Was the belt AND tensioners changed at 40k, as if you have evidence of this, there may be some comeback.

I hope you were not waiting to change the cambelt at 80.000 like VX say for its first change as they did change there minds and say 40.000 or 4 years.

I would be very very surprised if there is no valve damage if the belt went when you were doing 30 Mph.

You just cant trust VX bunch of muppets

How many times on here have people posted that cambelts and rollers need to be changed every 40,000/4 years, sorry to hear that you have experianced the dreaded failure but you have been pushing your luck mate. ::)I hope that the damage is minimal and your upand running soon.

The valves will be mullered......a re-con head is not to pricey...200-300 quid from some places.

Sorry to hear your dialema first of all....  If you suspect that they may charge £50 and not do it.. stipulate that you want a photocopy of the pressure test on your head, shall we call it insurance for future possible failure... they can't really argue.. can they?

Very best wishes

Just for your info it was last changed at 40,000 miles, so I wasn't pushing my luck  ::)
And yes I am well aware it needs doing every 40,000, so I was going to do it at around 80,000 miles, hence I am a bit p*ssed off, still waiting for a phonecall from Vauxhall today and time now............................17:44hrs ::)

Ok mate, good to hear that, so if the belt has failed at 35,000miles then surely that is coverd under vx warrenty, worth a try, have you got a receipt of when the belt and rollers were changed last time.

Have you got the service history, if not, ask vx to print off what they have got on your car, it just might be there on the printout...  failing that if you have a receipt from a private garage.. if it's a Gates, they too will honour premature failure to a degree... have a squint at there website...

Bit of a shyte AA man if he can't spot a failed cambelt!!!  Sorry to hear your bad luck - was the waterpump changed at last cambelt change??  This may have failed (i.e. seized - quite common, mine failed at 23k!) which can cause the cambelt to slip and either strip the teeth or snap.  Make sure you have a new waterpump fitted as well when they re-assemble!
