Tappets - Engine flush
« on: 06 August 2007, 10:31:12 »

As MDTM has noted when he saw my car, the tappets are a little bit noisier than normal, I suspect this was due to the VX service intervals that the car had with it's previous owner.

Is there an engine flush (Forte?) I could use that people on here would recommend? Will it help quieten the Tappets down?

Oh and before anyone says it.... Yes will be changing the oil every 5K with VX 5w30 (NOT AN OIL THREAD!!!)

I think wynns valve lifter is the 'one'
add it to oil, drive xxx miles, do an oil change.

Engine Flushes as such, seem not to be recommended.
They can work too well, dislodge dirt, which can cause a major problem
The recommended Engine flush, is a few 500 mile oil and filter changes.

My independant vauxhall garage always flushes when i have had oil changes. Should'nt do much harm if car has had reasonable history.
May be a factor as to why te breathers on my meega were virtually clear, only minor deposits in hard to get at places.  They use Forte motor flush btw.

VXL,

I have same (similar) problem on my 2.6.  I just replaced the centre exhaust silencers and back box as the blowing exhaust was covering up most of the noise.  Now I have a quiet exhaust I can hear the tapping ever more.  I don't know if the problem is related to a cracked manifold / sheared stud or maybe a damaged manifold/downpipe gasket, but one thing I’ll be doing later this week is to replace the oil and filter and then again in 500 miles.  I have read so many times on this forum that oil and filter changes does wonders for the car, even better with TC.

Tapping is only slight, a little bit more than normal (as MDTM said), afaik noisy tappets aren't really a great problem, more of an annoyance unless really noisy.

Will be changing the oil every 5K from now on but will also do a couple of extras in the first 5K. Have to say the the Vectra had 106K on the clock and I changed the oil (again VX fully synth) every 5K from when I got it (30K) and it still developed a noisy tappet (It was an X20XEV engine).

As far as flushing at the time of service, I don't see how that will improve things greatly, surely the flush needs to be 'run' around the engine for a few miles to do any good?

Last time I had one flushed, before I knew better was
get car hot,
add flush and run for 10 minutes
drop oil and replace.

I believe they are fine to use if they have always been used - ie you have a clean engine
BUT if you have a dirty engine, you could be in for trouble!

Sounds a bit back-to-front to me!
but on a side, engine flush and tappet treatment are different things anyway.

Jimbob

I remember reading about the Wynn's Tappet stuff, think it was in Car Mechanics magazine, they said that the trade / car sales outfits use it a lot and it does seem to work well.

This is what i've been told, if you know the cars history or have owned from new and have always used a flushing agent then it should be no problem but if not then don't as could end up causing more problems :(.

  Hope this helps,

IMHO Wynns tappet treatment is absolute crap! I have used it 4 times now and it makes not one diddly of difference. You would have more luck if you used a kangaroos penis marinated in Anne Whiticombes sweat.

I personally think you have more chance of finding a solid gold magic fridge on a council tiup, with a winning lottery ticket inside than quietening down Omega V6 tappets.
