BIG misfire trouble

Good to see some old names on here

After the recent heavy rain I was driving down the road very nearly out of fuel when all of a sudden she started running lumpy ....immediately I thought that some sludge had been dredged up as I had never run her so low before ..  so filled her up

No differernce so I have changed the fuel filter - no change
Checked for spark on all 6 HT leads - all ok
removed the injectors and cleaned them

No change - so I am thinking possibly Fuel pump or ...err I don't know as I am running out of ideas... as I know there is some serious knowledge here can anyone please help I am pulling out my hair!

Tank sludge is unlikely to be an issue, particularly as the fuel filter will remove it and given that the car is running sudgests some fuel is getting through so I would rule that out. If the filter was blocked then car would run or if partialy blocked, it wouldn't rev.

Its also worth noting that the only real way to test for a spark is with test plugs and a tech2 to actuate each firing. This is simply because in air, the voltage used on the combustion stroke will jump about 2 inches so its not a real test to pull leads looking for a spark because you might see one, but it could be weak.

I assume there is no fault light on or codes stored?

If so, my money would be on the DIS pack, particularly if it appears to be down on two cylinders....... but do meaure the resistance of the plug leads.

OK have checked the code and on a very lumpy tick over and yes you guessed correctly there is no service light on

I get error codes

19 - RPM Signal
21 - Throttle position sensor - high voltage
57 - Idle speed control valve - interuption
73 - Air flow sensor - low voltage
94 - Hall Effect switch High voltage
144 - No immobiliser signal

I guess some of these are caused by the lumpy tickover and will right themselves when fixed but nothing to point at the dispack?

ALso am I damaging the cat by running her in this way?

19 Looks to be the one, Crank Sensor knackered, change that, and things should improve

Well, the crank sensor is definately goosed (code 19).

Looks like you might also have an air leak.....but change the crank sensor first.

You say there is no fault light on with it running though which is strange given the stored errors.....

Ah....the crank sensor was replaced 6 months ago (3000 miles) ...  and as I have just stripped the engine down perhaps that has thrown up lots of errors.... is there a way to reset the brain so that it works out codes from new?

The crank sensor code would not be there if all was well (self healing)

Is it definately plugged in?

If not when you rewired it, you did leave enough slack for movement, and the cable not snapped?
and the cables not melted against anything hot?

Am I right in thinking 12 starts of the engine resets the fault codes as I am certain the code 19 I have is due to having the engine in bits.... remeber the root of this fault is that the engine is running lumpy AND the crank sensor is only 3000 miles... can't beleive it would have failed so soon....the old sensor is still hanging there so I suppose it is possible I plugged the wrong one in but I taped up the old one so unlikely ...is it 12 restarts or battery disconnect?

sorry, the 19 means you do need to replace sensor....

the others may be old, esp the 144.
