Oil leak
« on: 06 July 2007, 08:39:23 »

Have a 1998 2.5 v6 tourer. Only done 84,000
Work done in last few months.
Cambelt, tensioners and water pump.
New discs and pads all round.
Rocker cover gaskets replaced and breather pipes cleaned.
Now have a very bad oil leak, garage saying its the head gasket and that the car is not worth repairing.
no change in performance at all, just using a litre of oil every 50 miles.
Am I being conned or should I scrap it?
Cheers in advance for any help or ideas

Doubtful its HG, more likely the cam cover gaskets gone again. Did you use genuine gaskets last time?

That sure is some poor diag from the garage......a headgasket leak does not cause major oil loss.....is the oil being burnt or is it dripping out.....if dripping out, where from?

Does it get any better if you drive with the dipstick loose in the tube.

Are the breathers REALY well cleaned out including all the plenum assembly, breather box and pipes etc (sorry, have to rule out the obvious first)

Hi.
Not being any good with engines I can only take the garages word that they cleaned them.
The oil comes out without any pressure.
From the back of the engine, stand at front of car looking at engine, right hand side.
Pours out even when just ticking over. Was hoping a split pipe but cannot see anything.
Hope this helps

When you say back of engine, do you mean behind it, or on one side but towards the back

I'm thinking oil cooler to block unions, or maybe unions in the valley

It won't be HG..

Where do you live?

Hi guys.
I live in Oldham.
The oil appears to be coming from the back of the engine, bulkhead in way can't see anything.

The Oil Cooler is situated under the Plenum, and the inlet Manifold... Have a look at this PICTURE the Oil Cooler is under the plate at the bottom of the "V"... there are two oil pipes one towards the front the other towards the back the unions have seals they are between the pipe and oil cooler (if that makes sense)..
You can also see the Coolant Bridge ..

Hope this helps :y

How long ago were the cam cover gaskets changed? and did the oil loss start at the same time as the gaskets being changed?

If its what im thinking.....but would only apply if oil leak occured at the same time as gaskets being changed.....i could believe 1ltr of oil would be leaked every 50 miles.

Probably not, but what about the oil filter ? Not tight, sealing ring missing/misplaced ?

had the cam cover gaskets done about 4 months ago, because the plugs on both sides were covered in oil.
seemed to be ok for a while until the oil started pouring out.

the oil filter and sealing ring were changed last week and are ok.

the leak seems to be at the back and towards the top of the engine. going of the info so far the oil cooler or unions seem the next best bet.

is it easy or hard to do these. have a mechanic friend whose willing to look at it for me but has never worked on v6 before

Oil filter must be removed to release the oil pipes.

I agree with James and Mark. This sounds like a failed union connection.
Not difficult to fix. To be honest if you were planning on keeping the car I would change the oil cooler while you were there. The full kit is around £85 and takes around 3 hours.

If you decide to do it, and your mechainc friend needs some guidance, we can assist.
