SCREECHING NOISE FROM PULLEYS?
« on: 10 August 2007, 07:01:54 »

Just got to Dundee after driving all night, anyway this is just one of a couple of problems I have now, have a screeching/rubbing noise coming from the pulleys, looks sounds like its coming from the flywheel? or could be something else close to it alternator? Any ideas folks as I may just have to chop it in to Vx up here today. :(

Also all the way up the computer kept telling me to check oil level, I had only just topped it up before leaving, the check light would stay on and then go off, this was happenning all the way up, have to wait for the engine to cool before I can check the level. :(

Hi Mke,
What voltage is the battery at. Mine kept saying that had problems with oil level when blasting along from Perth, not Australia  ;D, and oil level was o.k. Found that alternator was on its way out. Alternator now changed and no issues with the engine, at the moment.  :y
Dave,

Don't know the battery voltage, but easy to check, thought it may be the alternator?

I`d be very wary Mike...screetching inthat area can be bad

nasty questions first- cambelt and tensioners when were they last done? .....it may be hard to tell if the screetching is from aux belt or the timing belt due to close proximity...so lets just rule out that one first ?

If your not sure you could pop the aux belt off and run for only a few seconds....does it go away..?

I'd be inclined to pull the aux. belt off (easy to do, just hold the idler pulley back against the tensioner and slip it off), run it for a few seconds and see if the noise is still there. If it is, don't drive it as it could be a cam belt tensioner on its' way out.

If the noise is aux. belt related have a look at the condition of the belt, make sure it's not cracked or glazed in appearance and feel for play or rumble in each of the accessory pullies. Make sure it's not rubbing on anything. It's not one of the notorious autovaux "not quite long enough" aux belts, is it?

Does turning air con on/off, turning steering lock to lock influence the screeching sound?

As to the oil warning you need to check the oil level manually. My guess is that the oil level warning switch is duff.

Just got back in house after meeting up with Mike in local town. Noise coming from around alternator/aux pulley area. Took Mike and car down to local VX (know the service Manager) and had the top aux pulley bearing diagnosed as the fault. WD sprayed on bearing and noise got less. They could not get the part until Tues and as Mike wants to get back down South tomorrow so he is taking 'as is'.

The alternator is giving out 14.08v so that is not too bad. The oil light looks as to be a sensor or connection.

I will let Mike post later when he can.

..I know but to be fair they did not want paying for the 15 mins that it took to diagnose the problem. Also they are one of these Masterfit outfits which tend not to hold many spares around. :o

Changed one on Monday, 99 - 2.5 Omega.
Bearing siezed up then  then it collaped cos it melted the outer.
Stopped rotating start to melt the belt
Would'nt want the belt wipping around under the bonnet if it snapped at speed

New tensioner £45.00 plus ribbed belt 29.00 [TC £17.00] + VAT.
Don't think you can get the pully only. If you can it was not in stock.
