They can be fixed - I've recently done mine (
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1185809896) - and if yours has the same problem as mine, which I'd suspect from the design, it'll be the ribbon cable connection to the circuit board. It's not an easy job but as I said it can be fixed - here's a quick run down of what I did.
Firstly look at what Lordmpl said about removal in the above thread. Then clean the ribbon and circuit board contacts (I used brasso) so when they are pressed together there is a good metal to metal contact, that's what was wrong with mine, there was no contact with some of them and bad contact with others. I didn't stick it back on in the way it was originally (not sure what they used) instead I lined the contacts up by holding it up to the light then using a bit of insulation tape I held it in place while I put it back together, then the light box thing held it in place. I did put a length of tape along the ribbon to make it thicker and hopefully give a bit more pressure on the contacts, but I don't know if that was necessary but mine works perfectly now.
If the ribbon to LCD contacts are bad I doubt anything can be done.
